“Very nice stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

After celebrating xmas at the Governers Camp we flew to Serena. It is wonderful, with a fantastic view, sitting by the fire looking out on Masai Mara. They have a great buffet - the food is really good. The staff is nice, the service is good, the shop is good and the rooms are very nice. We read about Serena, it seems it is almost a institution in Masai mara and very much wanted to go there. And we really enjoyed every bit of it. The safaris were great (not as good as in the Governors) and we got to see lions mating. We also went to a Masai-village, and that is something you have to do - we have the best memories!!

“Mindblowing!”

My first trip to 'Mother Continent' Africa!and I couldn't have asked for a better experience to begin with. The trip from the airstrip to the hotel was barely 7-10 minutes and we had already begun our safari experience by sighting Elephant herds and Thomson's gazelle on the way. Perched on a small hillock with amazing views of the African Savannah, the hotel is modeled along the lines of a Masai Village. In fact all rooms are designed as a collections of independent 'huts' & get an uninterrupted view of the Savannah(which must be even better during the migration). The rooms are small but tidy and functional. The beds are firm with a net provided(to keep of Mosquitoes & bugs). My safari over the next two days was spectacular with us sighting A Black Rhino, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippopotamuses, Lions, Buffalo, Wart Hogs, Wildebeest,Topi, Thomsons Gazzelle, Bushbuck, Dinks, Hyenas, Waterbuck, Zebra's,Cheetah and many more. The night safari @$90 per person is expensive but recommended as its quite exciting to go out in an 'open' 4x4, not knowing whats lurks around the corner, esp when all Predators are in full flow. The staff at the hotel are very courteous and the service excellent. The food spread (lunch/dinner/Breakfast) amazed me (we are in the middle of the jungle right!). All in all a great experience, I hope to return soon for a longer stay at this remarkable property.

Room Tip: the rooms in the 'middle' of all the huts are excellent.

Serena lodge is close to the serena air strip. I would suggest people to go by air than road. The important part of the the trip was the game drive. The drive was close to perfect. The guide was very helpful. We saw all the animals.

“EARLY HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

As a travel agent I could not go on holiday over Christmas so I scheduled mine early December. Destination Mara Serena Lodge Masai Mara . Other than the usual case of encounter with the big 5 and a few wildbeests (I was late for the migration) Serena perched strategically on hills facing the great Mara River was quite ab experience . Right from the reception room service everything was worth Serena's reputation.
Though I travelled by road the airstrip for flights from Nairobi and 5 minutes away .
Mara Serena and other Serena properties in East Africa I have beenm to will never disappoint.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the pool

“Things got better.”

Our group arrived late in the day, but in time for dinner, after a long drive from Nakuru. The lodge cannot be blamed for the state of the roads, but be prepared for a long, bumpy drive. I would consider flying in next time. We were greeted with the usual wet towel and glass of juice before being shown to our rooms. This was the third place we stayed on our safari, the first two being tented camps, so I had certain expectations. Upon being shown Room 52A I was yearning for a tent. I was traveling as a single, but had paid the single supplement. In spite of this I was put in the smallest room I have ever been in. The twin bed was tightly wedged into an alcove so that you had to crawl in over the foot. I could have dealt with that, what I was having trouble with was the smell of sewage, innumerable small gnats that came through the mosquito netting so that I kept waking up to spit them out, and the sink drained onto the bathroom floor-- a fact I discovered by taking a fall on the slippery floor and bruising a rib. As an added chuckle, rather than getting a terry cloth bathrobe, I got just the belt. Management informed me there was nothing they could do as the lodge was completely booked that night. They did move me into a standard room the next night, which was quite nice, fairly bug free, and had the whole bathrobe! I did not receive any compensation however for the one night in the miniscule, bug infested, sewage smelling room after having paid the single supplement. At least a complementary cocktail or bottle of wine could have been offered.
The food was quite good, even on New Year's Eve when dinner was served outside... until the thunderstorm hit and the heavens opened up. Kudos to the staff for the speed with which they moved everything inside and set it up all over again. It made for a memorable start to the New Year.
I am basing my ratings on the second room I received, as I believe it is the only one at the lodge that suffers these problems. I do feel the management should have compensated me in at least a token way for the discomfort and injury of the first night's stay.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 52A at all costs!!
