“Nice and relaxed, but overpriced and not all was good”

We stayed at Jannat for 6 nights at the beginning of August. The hotel is a very nice swaili house well renovated and with a lot of terraces with sofas where you can relax. The gardens are also very nice, there is a cool atmosphere and the personnel is friendly and helpful. However the place is surely not a boutique hotel as it is advertised. We were given the best room, but even there there was no hot water. Our room was very large and very nicely decorated, but some of the other rooms we saw were very small and with very poor bathroom facilities. The pool looks nice in the pictures but it is tiny, there is no room to lay down around the pool and it is not cleaned very often (in fact the water looks always not clear). Breakfast was basic. The hotel is also quite far from the main street and to reach it you need to cross quite a lot of back streets full of donkey's escrement and open-air sewage. We discovered that the price was 30-40% higher than equivalent places in Lamu. If you want to stay in Lamu, book a place for the first night and then look around, there are equivalent or better places for much less money.

“Safe and peaceful”

Very nice place to stay. Close to town, where we could let the kids go alone because of the safe and traffic-free environment. A small, clean pool where our youngest proudly learned to swim. We liked the special features of the old building, with stairs and small terraces "everywhere" where you can find a place for yourself to relax.
I am glad we stayed in town and not in the beach resorts on Shela - where I think we could get bored quite soon. It's easy to find a boat for a trip to the beaches - but to be honest we also enjoyed just relaxing by the pool at Jannat's. Had a fine boat trip with Jannat's own boat, with an exciting walk in the woods on an other part of Lamu island.

“Paradise Found”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2010

Having found the hotel in the Rough Guide and hoping for the best, we were entranced by Jannat House, by Johnny and Elizabeth and by all the staff. It was perfect. Our first room was not quite right and they helpfully put us in a room at the top of the house with a wonderful view and lots of air and our own verandah just outside the bedroom. They laid on dhow excursions for us and nothing was too much trouble. We loved Lamu and were so glad we were staying in the town and not in Shela because the atmosphere was so tremendous. Will definitely hope to come again.

“A perfect hotel in paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2010

I booked it through its website and got a discount for booking online. I also got free transfer from the airport to the hotel, wich is in the centre of Lamu town, yet secluded in a beautiful labyrinth of narrow streets so you can relax with the surrounding silence. The place is astonishing and the staff, especially the Norwegian boss and the Kisumu waiter at the bar by the pool, wonderful. I had booked half board and the food was really nice, mostly fish since we are in the Indian Ocean. I recommend walking to Shella beach every morning with the low tide and returning to Lamu town in the afternoon with a boat or walking if the tide is not high. Shella is one of the most paradisiac beaches I have ever seen, but the tide is strong and dangerous there, so be careful.

“Feel at home, work hard and relax in a nice place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

Jannat House is a very charming house with a lot of stairs, verandahs and rooms here and there. The swimmingpool and restaurant by the poolside is a very nice meeting point, the staff are very friendly and the food is welltasting. It worked very well to have a group of students staying here, they had a lot of space both for relaxing and working.
