“Comfortable, a little old fashioned, excellent service”

Where to start, this is a family run bed & breakfast/small guesthouse/hotel. The decor is "pre WW2 Kenyan safari". It is both charming and dated. The dark wood looks dreary during the day but comes to light at night.

The rooms are a similar mix of "dated" and "modern". The bathrooms appear to have had a makeover, however, the bedroom proper has not. We found the beds a little flimsy and the bulbs in the lights too dim (40 watt bulbs do not make for easy reading). The wood in the room accentuates the darkness of the room.

There are other areas that could do with some minor "sprucing" - the pool area looks a little tired, particularly the surrounds and the awning, which appears dirty, but isn't - it is just the material that it is made from.

They are the downsides. now to the pluses and there are many.

Firstly, location. This is in suburban Nairobi - well away from the bustle (and congestion) of downtown Nairobi. It is close to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (11am daily for the feeding) and within walking distance of the Giraffe Centre (another very rewarding place to visit). It is easily accessible to Wilson Airport (the old downtown Nairobi airport used for safari transfers).

The food at Macushla is very good - breakfast was a very comprehensive cooked to order meal. Dinner in the evening is similarly cooked to order and it was equally good. The staff are very friendly, helpful and attentive. It is this combination of good food and friendly service that lifts the rating from average to very good. The early morning "wake up" cup of tea was very welcome each morning.

Is this the most modern, up to date place we've stayed ? - no - it is not - in some ways that is part of its charm (although there a few things that if attended to would be more than helpful). You stay here because of its location, its ambience of a bygone era of colonial Kenya and its attention to genuine service.

“Coming home to Macushla”

It has been many years now since I first discovered Macushla House and I have stayed there on at least 5 different occasions. It feels like a comfortable chair where you can sink in and relax, either before your safari or to catch your breath before going home.

I have stayed in all the rooms in the main house, but have yet to stay in the cottages. It is an old fashioned, small hotel with really nice, fresh food and excellent service. I would wish that they would buy some new mattresses as I find them a little old and tired, and sometimes the showers can be a bit erratic but I highly recommend the place to anyone not needing to be in the city environment.

Close to all the tourist attractions and near to Wilson's airport, I have no doubt that I'll return again and again.

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We stayed at Macushla house for 1 night at the end of our safari (booked based on trip advisor reviews). Since we are a family of four, I expected to have to book to rooms. However they offered us a 2 bedroom house (Fadhili house) for only $210, so I reserved that instead. The house was stunning and, upon seeing it, we immediately regretted not planning on staying there longer. There was a big and extremely well-decorated living area, kitchen and two bedrooms each with an ensuite bathroom. We were extremely well looked after by Walter and the other staff who were very professional. We arrived on New Year’s Eve in time to have a very nice 3-course dinner (with choices for each course) which came with a bottle of champagne (yes a full bottle, which was more than we could drink with only 2 adults). We had no idea what it was going to cost but were pleasantly surprised to learn later that it was only about $80 for all four of us with the champagne. The next day, they served us a very elaborate and delicious breakfast (which was included in the stay). We then walked to the Giraffe Center (about a 15 min walk) and spent an enjoyable couple hours there feeding the giraffes and shopping for souvenirs (there is a nice shop there). We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool and watching the many monkeys in the gardens around the pool. My son even saw a hyrax in the trees which we have never seen before. We had a late night flight, so had to check out of our room, but they stored the luggage for us and let us use all their facilities. Walter also kept on top of the taxi service to make sure they came for us on time (apparently they often show up much later than you tell them so tell the taxi driver to be there 30 min before you really want to leave). I would highly recommend Macushla house as a quiet place to relax and be pampered by the great staff.

Room Tip: Fadhili house is great for a family.

“A great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

My wife, 13-year old granddaughter and I spent five nights at Macushla House. We arrived late the first evening and were greeted by Paul who got us settled in our own two-bedroom cottage. We were there for a couple of days while visiting an orphanage near Gnong, then left for safari and returned for three more nights before departing for home. The breakfasts were great, the beds comfortable (complete with mosquito netting) and the dinners very good. The service/hospitality was superb, the gardens beautiful and the House was close to the giraffe center and the elephant orphanage. I would suggest one or two reading lights. If a traveler has a desire to be in the city center, this is not the place... but, for convenience, comfort, hospitality and good food it can't be beat for the price.

“An oasis in the chaos!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

What a gem! My father and I stayed on 2 separate nights pre and post a trip to Rwanda. We were allocated rooms in the main house which were spacious and comfortable. My only suggestion would be for a mirror and electrical socket to be in easy reach of each other for hair drying purposes. The staff was so helpful and allowed me to leave some of my luggage in the office for my collection on the last night before flying home. The decor is fascinating with nic nacs from various travels dotted about. Maow, the cat, was an added bonus. Tea and biscuits were served when we arrived each afternoon and food was plentiful, we couldn't do it justice. A definite recommendation when staying in Nairobi.
