“clean and secure”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2011

In caotic dusty and overpriced Nairobi one of the overpriced but decent place to stay.
Clean ensuite-rooms has seen more days.Bathroom was OK.Sometimes water is not
running in this city.Tired rooms coming with bunk bed + mosquito net + fan +
wardrobe + Tv + head lamp + table & chairs + water filled jug and two glass.Get ready for an large and heavy door key which is not easy to carry and use but you will never forget when you are leaving.Sorroundings are not looking too dangerous but not to go out alone after dark is a good idea.Near to the Central Market and several food shops and around two/three blocks to the shopping mall has an little food court and internet and which is including an Nakumatt western type huge supermarket. All the rooms are not in same conditions and needs to contact and agree with them before coming. Management is OK and honest and security is working well. This is an centrally located & bit overpriced but secure place to stay. There is no breakfast. For a couple of days business travels I will come again.

“Great place for a budget traveler”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

Stayed here en route form tanzania, just one night. $21 gets you a dorm-like room with a hot water shower and a comfortable bed, a bargain for a clean room in these parts. Had a very good night's sleep here. Staff is friendly and should you need to grab some snakcs etc there is a Tusky's just downthe street and a massive supermarket, "Nakumatt", around the corner and down the street, open 24 hours. I advise you to grab something to eat for breakfast at a market as the hotel restaurant seems to have no concept of real food (instant coffee and rotten fruit? Yech!)...
Paid a visit to the weekend "Masai market" the following day which was so filled with hard-sell touts that pestered me so much I left after 10 minutes. Shame, because they had some nice stuff and I was prepared to buy...

“Wonderful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

I spent six nights here recently for just $21 per night (small single room with no television; television costs extra.) The room was clean, there was hot water in the shower, and a mosquito net over the bed. The best thing about the hotel is its location, which is the city center. Just around the block are supermarket, internet cafe, high end coffee shop, pharmacy, and wonderful restaurant (Mengeles.) Although warned it is not safe to be out after dark, there were enough people on the streets at night that I felt safe walking back alone to the hotel. I would definitely stay here again if I return to Nairobi.

“For the Budget Traveler, a Good Choice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

The Hotel Embassy is a good hotel for a budget traveler. It is extremely inexpensive, and the rooms are clean, albeit a bit worn looking. The first night we arrived we discovered the toilet would not flush properly, but on reporting it to the front desk it was repaired immediately.

The restaurant in the hotel, like the hotel itself, looks as though it has seen better days (and the restrooms were frightening!) but the food was quite excellent, and the manager - always impeccably dressed in a suit and tie - would walk to and fro among the tables making sure his diners were satisfied. The only quibble is that it seems to have just one chef, consequently it could take a long time to get one's meal.

As a romantic getaway, it would not be the best choice, but if you are looking to spend a few nights in Nairobi and do not want to spend a lot of money, the Hotel Embassy is a good bet.

  • Liked — Good location downtown
  • Disliked — Slightly shabby and the room had no view

“Decent hotel in the heart of Nairobi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2008

people found this review helpful

The Hotel Embassy was a nice hotel in the heart of Nairobi. Nairobi itself is not terribly safe, however we had no issues at all at the hotel, and we stayed there a total of 5 nights. Definitely recommend it to any budget travelers. there is hot water, toilet seats (a luxury it would seem compared to certain other budget hotels in Africa) and the rooms are clean, though a little aged. The staff is friendly and helpful, the restaurant cooks some delicious East Indian-Kenyan dishes, and you are in the heart of downtown so close to all ammenities. No real safety deposit box, which is dissapointing, but you can leave valuables with the manager to pickup at certain times.
