“overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2011

Hi
I went to this hotel as suggested by Lonely Planet... my guide was printed in 2006 so I expected changes in prices, anyway.
However, when I arrived, I was surprised by the price but as it was late in the evening I checked in anyway. That evening I went out and checked other hotels nearby, like Princess which was 45% cheaper for similar services.
When I came back to the hotel, I asked the staff why the price was so high compared to other hotels, the staff spoke very poor English and mis-understood that I didnt want to pay, they wanted to retain my passport, etc. It made me furious and finally they called the manager and gave my passport back to me.
Next morning, I had an explanation from the manager/owner about their price. However, I found him very arrogant and unconsiderate so I left out that same morning and went to Princess hotel where staff were very friendly.

“Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

The hotel has basic rooms and no furniture. The beds are comfy and clean. However the bathroom was very reasonable with enough space to shower and plenty hot water. We had two rooms next to the reception area but it was not very loud during the night. For the price this hotel was adequate. We also had our laundry done here and it costed us less than 20EGP for a load of laundry!

“Clean and friendly - just dont go near the excursions!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2010

Happy Land is a very clean and friendly hotel catering for backpackers. At these prices you can do a lot worse in Luxor (I should know as I have!). Rooms are basic but clean with working AC and decent showers. The best thing as others have mentioned is the rooftop restaurant, the breakfast is the best I ate in Egypt. Staff are really friendly and create a nice atmosphere, and there is hibiscus tea available at front desk which is always a bonus.

One thing - stay well clear of the excursions and extras! Its not easy booking these things in Egypt and getting the price right but Happy Land excursions are expensive and poor. We had serious problems with the owner Mr Ibrahim - I notice one earlier review refers to the owner as an "honest businessman"!!! Mr Ibrahim, is this you writing reviews on your own hotel?!? We booked a car to take us to Edfu and Kom Ombo on a day in July, after getting it he tried to charge us almost double to turn on the air conditioning (which was actually just the fan), thats ridiculous and no way to treat customers, what a crook. That said the rest of the staff are really nice and its quite possible you could stay for days and not encounter Mr Ibrahim, dont let him put you off!

“Not so happy with Happyland”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

Another disappointed traveler: I arrived at Happyland expecting comfort and hospitality after hearing good reviews from travelers and Lonely Planet. The reality, however, is different. Happyland does not stand up to its reputation. The biggest problem we had were with the staff. On our first night in the hotel, we found that our AC was not functioning correctly (room 112). As it was July and boiling outside, I immediately tried to address the issue with the nightstaff. After first explaining that the AC was not working, I was told "Yes it is" without hesitation. I had to convince the guy to physically come up to the room in order to prove it. After examining the AC, the guy then told me it was my own fault the room was hot because I took a shower and then opened the bathroom door (but the bathroom door was closed). He told me to wait and the room would eventually get cool. He even began to get hostile over the situation, telling me I could go knock on another guest's door and check for myself that their AC was working despite it being past midnight (relevance???). After waking up at 3 am covered in sweat, however, I was not convinced. I complained the next day but was not allowed to change rooms. At the end of my stay at Happyland, I told the owner that the AC never worked correctly and he should address the issue lest he has problems with it in the future. He simply said "OK" without so much as an apology or acknowledgment.

Finally, although the breakfast was great, the laundry service is no longer free. I bypassed a cheaper laundry service in Aswan on the assumption that Happyland's advertised free laundry service would actually be free. After turning in my clothes, I was later told "your clothes are done" and lead to a pile of my wrinkled clothes left on the community sofa where I then had to bag them up and bring them back to my room myself.

If I ever return to Luxor, I will not stay at the Happyland, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone else.

“Not Very Happy Land”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2008

I am rather amazed that this hotel had several positive reviews. There were some reasonable things about it....the price and some of the staff, but the owner was loud, angry and aggressive! The tour to the Valley of the Kings was with a great guide (Issac), but the rest of the tours or transportation that was organized were not very good. My room was spartan but clean, but the location is not very good. Also, although I am hardly EVER bothered by noise, it was nearly impossible to sleep because of the owner always yelling at someone or another, or the night staff were doing the same.

There are many other places in Luxor that are superior in every way to Happy Land, and I wouldn't bother recommending it to anyone.

  • Liked — Relatively inexpensive
  • Disliked — Noise and obnoxious owner
