Over the past three months, we stayed at the Al Moudira for a total of six weeks, in early December, again in January and then at the end of February and into March. It became a second home for us, and I will miss it. I will miss the people, especially the owner Zeina, and her assistant Konny, and all the rest of the staff who made us feel so comfortable. I will miss the gardens, the sound of the fountains, and the huge comfortable rooms that feel like exotic apartments.

The place is full of interesting people, mostly British, French and German couples and families, along with the occasional A&K group from America. There is a small comfortable "bar," with many comfy chairs and sofas, where you will find Zeina and Konny talking to their guests, making sure that the little things are being taken care of, and introducing people who might share common interests. We met a number of professional connections that way.

The food was very good, as was the service. They rotate the menu weekly, with six or seven main course selections everyday. We found ourselves looking forward to "Tuesday's shrimp," or "Thursday's lamb" as the weeks went by. There were evenings during the winter when it was too cold to eat in the courtyard, but it was beautiful when we did.

As for the rest of the hotel, we were too busy to use the pool or the spa so we can't comment on those. The gift shop is full of exquisite merchandise gathered from the owner's travels. The business center consists of one computer which is in steady demand so bring your laptop, since the business center itself has wifi.

Finally, I will miss the quiet and peaceful farming that surrounds the hotel, with donkeys braying at night and the wide open, far reaching fields of sugarcane and wheat that appear when you walk out of the hotel. This is the real Egypt, away from the flashy tourist promenades that comprise the east bank of Luxor. Some people might complain it is too far off the beaten path. But that's the one of it's many, many charms.

Running such a unique hotel must be an absolute nightmare, so all credit to Konny, the German manager, for a fantastic job! The people who have given low rated reviews just do not understand what it takes!

This was my first visit to Luxor - I've done my Egyptology bit now, along with seething crowds of other tourists - had my basin full of hassle in the shops, on the streets and along the shores of the Nile - I will come back, but only for the peace and tranquillity at Al Moudira.

Yes, the al Moudira is a stunningly beautiful hotel. Much detail and finesse has gone into the design of the structures and of the garden. The interior decoration is detailed as well, although some guest rooms have uncomfortable settees which are better admired than utilized. However, on two stays at this hotel during our trip to Egypt, we found significant difficulties with our rooms on our second visit: a travelling companion received an electric shock when he turned on the cold water tap (!), my shower head simply fell off, my room heater did not work, & televisions in both rooms were on the blink. I was moved into another room, which was actually a much nicer room in terms of bathroom design and furnishings and I enjoyed my stay in this room, but was not surprised when I found that the gorgeously tiled shower/bath did not drain! Moreover, all six bicycles were broken on our first visit w either flat tires or brakes in disrepair; we spent 20 minutes pumping up tires and then were asked to pay for their use on our return (we had been unaware there was a charge); the Al Moudira did relent when we protested. Meals in the restaurant (we had 3 dinners) were disappointing, despite the beautiful room; for example, the special filet did not arrive as promised with gorgonzola sauce, but with a brown sauce; the meat was tough; the service was unapologetic. The cost of the meals far exceeded their value. On our return visit, other guests may have arrived at the same conclusion we had, as the large dining room was closed and dinner was served in what had been the anteroom. Overall, we felt that the Al Moudira is at this moment poorly managed in terms of maintenance and performance of the staff. Finally, be aware that this hotel is 40 minutes from Luxor, so going into town is a considered decision, and one will want to go in to town to see the Karnak and Luxor Temples and to access the internet, as the internet (free) at the hotel was totally dysfunctional on both visits (messages could be written, but not sent or saved, even closing screens was a challenge). In sum, Al Moudira pleased our eyes no end, but was otherwise a disappointment shared by the two parties in our group. It is not up to top boutique hotel standards.

Al Moudira is a very special hotel. My husband and I and our two children spent three nights there over Christmas. The rooms were beautiful, the service was great and the food was very good. The hotel was an oasis away from the crowds of tourists on the East Bank. We had breakfast each morning on a lovely terrace that was flooded with warm sunshine which helped to ward off the morning chill. After touring crowded sites, we would return to the peaceful hotel and put our feet up by the lovely pool. The flies around the pool area were annoying but we had the same problem at our hotel in Aswan so this issue is not unique to Al Moudira. The atmosphere at the hotel is very relaxing .....with the sound of running water from the hotels many fountains and all the beautiful gardens. We loved Al Moudira and every other hotel we stayied in during our trip paled in comparison.

We chose this hotel because of the website, which it lived up to and more. After a week sailing the Nile this was an oasis in the desert. Our room was like something out of a fantasy movie, it was huge and unique and totally decadent. The pool area was quiet and relaxing with great food and great service. It was hard to imagine we were in the middle of nowhere. While many reviews are written by people who wanted to be in the midst of things in Luxor, the peace and isolation was just what we needed and the drive to the hotel gave us a chance to see another side of life in Egypt. For our trip to the Valley of the Kings and Queens it was very convenient so the location was not a problem. This hotel had everything we needed (even a free albeit slow internet facility). We loved it so much, we wish we had stayed longer. Al Moudira is an experience in itself and so much more than just a hotel, well worth every cent.
