This hotel, situated close to the Corniche and the Nile River, is a work in progress. When I last visited the Tutotel three years ago, the owners were adding an extension at the rear of the existing structure. It seemed to me that not a great deal had been accomplished in the intervening years. And the main building is definitely showing it's age now. Despite, or perhaps because of the decidedly relaxed efforts of the less than highly motivated cleaning staff - they seem to be more interested in currying favour with guests to enhance their prospects for "backsheesh" when the guest checks out - the hallways are a bit grungy, the carpeting is old and stained, the walls cracked and occasionally peeling and there is an ever present odour of smoke and dust and time about the place. The rooms are generally clean, but be warned that they can vary enormously by floor and location. Lots of groups use this hotel, so, not surprisingly, it exhibits signs of being very well used indeed. When I was there in December, the elevators (2) were both out of service and they stayed that way for days. The breakfast buffet is certainly acceptable with lots of choice. Much of the food is Egyptian and it is good. The chef will make you an omlette, but it is a liesurely process indeed. Sit back and enjoy the muddy coffee, the hot tea or the other foods on offer in the warming trays. There is also generally a choice of fresh vegetables which seemed to me to be safe to eat as I had no problems at all. One thing that can be an immense aggravation in this hotel, as elsewhere in Egypt, is the permissive attitude toward smoking. Until objections with the manager were registered, smoking was allowed in the main dining room. This being Egypt, both tourists and Egyptians took full advantage of this lax policy. While that practice was ended during my recent stay, every other public area in the hotel is simply choked with cigarette smoke - the coffee shop, lounge, lobby and entrance way. This is Egypt: get used to it. As a non smoker, it is not at all pleasant, but it is simply unavoidable. The staff can be aloof or they can be most helpful depending upon whether or not one makes the relatively simple effort to establish a personal association with the people at the front desk, the room boys or the dining room staff. They can then be counted upon to display the well known Egyptian attributes of hospitaliy, curiosity and friendliness. The swimming pool on the roof is fairly small, but allows for good tanning and a cold dip in the heavily chlorinated water. It also affords a superb view to the nearby Nile river and the cruise boat and felucca traffic on the water. One can also enjoy splendid views to the West Bank, especially at night, which the authorities have lit up with floodlights. Luxor is an indescribably aggravating city for tourists, especially those who are not accustomed or prepared for the non-stop pestering and hassling by absolutely everyone from taxi and kalesh drivers, felucca and ferry boat operators to all manner of souvenir vendors. Even those of us who have visited Egypt on numerous previous occasions never quite get used to the enormously tiring, emotionally draining, never ending pestering of people bent on selling some good or service. The only advice one can offer is to be firm - very firm - in one's refusal, while trying to maintain a degree of calm and politeness. It is not an easy thing to do, especially if one is in the city for an extended period of time, as I was. There is simply no escaping the hassles anywhere and everywhere in the city. This is Luxor; it has always been this way and it is not going to change. The other thing worth noting is the odd and peculiar habit of Egyptian drivers to use their horns without restraint. And interestingly, the loudest of all are to be found on the legiions of cheap Chinese "Dayun" motorcycles. This mindless din can last well into the night and begin early in the morning. Choose your room carefully! Allan H. Adams.
