“Don't even think about it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

I booked this hotel in April 2011 for a stay in September, through travel republic, whose website boasts 'Located in the city of Luxor, the TuTotel Luxor is nuzzled in a secluded area on the and#8220;Nile Cornicheand#8221; along the magnificent Nile River and only a few walking minutes from the spectacular Luxor Temple. In the hotel-s restaurant, Egyptian and International gastronomy can be explored. The hotel also boasts an all night long discotheque. The pool is located on the roof of the building where magnificent sunsets can be enjoyed. The Luxor Airport is about 8 km away.'

The same hotel with the same information is being offered today, but having been here for 4 nights I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The pool is currently closed, as is the roof terrace, the restaurant doesn't exist, you have to walk to a restaurant on the corniche for your meals, which is a great restaurant with the best food in luxor, but as a woman alone, I wouldn't walk out at night and it's such a ridiculously short walk that a taxi is laughable. I asked for a taxi to go to mcdonalds, there is a published rate in the hotel lobby, they charged me twice as much!

The Luxor Temple is not 'a few mins walk', it's about 15 minutes walk away, in hot weather with every peddler in the city trying to sell you their wares along the way, and unfortunately there are a few who don't understand the word no, though I have learned that a mobile phone in one hand and a threat to call the police works well :)

There is no discoteque, though the signage on the front of the hotel boasts it too.

The hotel is on a busy main road, immediately opposite a primary school, children start school before 7.30am and if you are planning a lie-in, forget it, noise is at a high decibel volume from very early in the morning, and never stops, honking horns right into the night.

The hot water is turned off and you have to ask for it to be turned on every time you need a shower, and it took 36 hours for this request to be complied with when i first arrived. Prior to arriving at this hotel I had spent 2 weeks on the Nile cruising, but since being here, have several mosquito bites, having suffered none in the preceding two weeks, I showed them to the receptionist, 30 mins later the housekeeper turned up with a can of mosquito killer for me to spray the room.

NO one speaks any meaningful English and my little Arabic didn''t get me very far.

The housekeepers, both of them, sat outside my room waiting for me to vacate it so they could clean it daily, it was rather disconcerting. On the first day, after I returned from lunch they followed me back to my room to check if I was happy with it, and stood waiting for a tip!!!

The hotel is fairly cheap, though I selected it because of the description on travel republic's website particularly with regard to its location, rather than the cost, but it doesn't live up to a single claim, definitely one to chalk up to experience, and avoid like the plague.

“The worst case hotel scenario”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2011

This is the worst hotel that anyone, anywhere has ever stayed. Where do you start? Other people's hair in the beds, mould in the bathroom, a breakfast that featured wilting cucumber (did anyone else know cucumber can wilt?) and an egg that smells like death itself... but the real clincher... the really special moment was when you tried to go to the rooftop pool. You walk through what literally looks like a bomb sight - don't think rubbish, think rubble. An entire windowless floor that looks like a bomb exploded in it. Then when you get to the cold, half empty pool - the decking around it creaks menacingly while you stand 100m above the ground. I don't ask for much in a hotel, I've stayed in plenty of basic places before, but this baby is structurally unsound. In all likelihood, it will have fallen down by now. Everyone keep your distance.

“Smelly hole, Dirty Pit!”

Stayed here for a week in jan cause we missed our flights (Due to weather) i was booked for Luxor for 3 weeks and had to stay for 1 in this "Hotel" cause our other hotel sold our room, this is the mankyist hotel in Luxor, the lobby is full of shiftey Egyptian "Staff" walking around looking to either sell you something or make money of you some how! The owner is a well known crook who owns a few "restaurants" in luxor also, ive seen him twice been seriously abuseive to his low paid staff, He parks his BMW's outside the hotel to make it look classey, but you have been warned this hotel is a dirty pit, the pool is a festered stew and the id advise you to take heed to my advice, dont stay here no matter what the price..

“A WARNING!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2011

Made the mistake of being unaware of ‘Trip Adviser’, if I had, I would never have stayed at this 3 star hotel. I would give it 1 star nowadays.

I was shocked at the room I stayed in, it was very shabby, the carpet was dirty and stained even with toe clippings on the floor, and I couldn’t open the curtains properly as they were jammed on the rails. The mini fridge was unclean; the furniture was worn and tatty. I managed to negotiate a different room the next day with only slight improvements. No hot water in the mornings, in the evening I would have to make a request at the reception for them to heat the water so I could shower normally 30-40 mins later.

The roof terrace/café bar does not exist, just a pile of rubble and building work, no apologies from management.
Checked out the roof top pool, the sunbeds were disgusting!! Photo’s included!

At least the bedding was clean in the rooms, though I would have preferred the cleaners to spend less time making origami shapes out of towels and provide a cleaner room?
The evening meal was unavailable in the hotel, I had to take a 5 min walk to El Kababgy Restaurant on the Nile and choose a plate of food from a limited selection, the food was edible though.

Overall I thought the hotel was the ‘pits’ maybe 10-15 yrs ago when the hotel was built it may have been delightful? The owners just let everything deteriorate and expect tourists to put up with it.
The only thing it had going for it, it was only 10 mins walk from Luxor Temple, the local ferry, rail station and the use of a fabulous swimming pool at the Winter Palace Hotel!

Room Tip: 515 is the room I accepted in the end (twin)

This hotel is very well placed for everything. The rooms are basic but clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and Daniel in the shop is a lovely man. You can get discounts at the Edris restaurants Kabache and Metropolitan and the hotel boasts a very good nightclub. I plan to stay here every christmas and new year.
