“A very good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I stayed at the St Joseph in November and have no complaints at all. It's very clean, the staff are friendly and helpful and the food was great value for money, especially with the 7-day coupon offer there. I was looked after very well in the restaurant, especially by Hassan the head waiter. The kalesh drivers loitering outside are a pain at first, pestering you to take a ride, but if you keep politely brushing them off they get the message eventually. The balcony of my room gave me a lovely view of the Valley of the Kings outer perimeters, with Hatsheput's temple visible to my camera zoom. Give a little tip for service and you won't be disappointed. The St Joseph hotel will get my reservation next time I'm in Luxor. Ray. T.

Room Tip: Ask for a Nile view when booking

“Great value for money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Booked the St Joseph for a 2 week stay, 4-18th Jan, 2012, as a stunningly cheap flight+hotel+transfer package via Easyjet Holidays, and we were not disappointed. Staff very accommodating - let us move to a huge, 3-bed room (414) with sunny balcony at no extra cost after we found the Nile view room (402) we'd asked for was a bit too near the road noise. Still got woken up by the local mosque for morning prayers at 5am-ish, but Luxor is a busy, noisy city, so you'd be hard pushed to find silence there at these prices.
It's not the Ritz, of course, but very clean and friendly and we would definitely go back there. Most guests are regulars who won't go anywhere else. We were happy with the basic buffet breakfasts on our B&B deal, but ate out in the evenings nearby. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, and food is a very personal choice, so try a few and see what suits you best.

“The free wi-fi is a great selling point.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We have a friend who stays at this hotel several times a year in periods of about 10 weeks per visit.
Having persuaded us, my Wife and I decided to join him, but for only two weeks in January.
This is our first visit to Egypt (Although we had been to Sharm El Sheikh, this does not represent the true Egypt.), and we both had reservations about what to expect; which of course, is very subjective.

ALL the staff at this hotel were very professional and obliging.

The food was good, although we did eat out on several periods, mainly because we had to pay either way. The breakfast was perfunctory, but omelettes/fried eggs are available on request.

The rooms were very clean, the beds surprisingly comfortable; the air conditioning appliances had all been replaced with modern units.

The water was ALWAYS hot and constant at any time we chose to use it; and I mean VERY hot - hotter than any hotel I have ever stopped in.

The distribution of electrical sockets throughout the room could have been better, but that is just being pedantic.

There were two lifts available to all floors, including the sun terrace on the roof; the food and service up there was impeccable, as was the fantastic view of the Nile and the fertile pasture beyond.

This hotel is positioned on a main thoroughfare, and we noticed that Egyptian drivers possess a love affair with their horns; it is quite an education observing their driving behaviour from the safety of the roof terrace. Bring earplugs if you can only sleep in silence.

The hotel is owned and operated by a local family; as is the adjoining jewellery store.

This hotel has a great number of stalwart visitors from the UK; such a legacy speaks volumes.

The free Wi-Fi is a great feature; although Egyptian internet is intrinsically slow, it is better than paying something extortionate for the same service.

Egypt desperately needs more tourists following the revolution; this hotel, and many others, as well as restaurants and taxi drivers etc are all suffering at the moment; please bear this in mind.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have larger balconies, and a better view of the Nile.

“Felt right at home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

I was very happy with St Joseph and will definitely stay there again when I'm next in Luxor.

It's true that the rooms are a bit dated but I felt that the cleanliness and lovely view over the Nile to the Theban hills more than made up for it. The handy location also makes it very noisy indeed - bring your ear plugs!

I felt that the hotel staff really tried to please us - my husband got to choose the better one of two rooms. They had lovely room service which meant that we ordered tea and large gin&tonics to our room most nights! :) Our housekeeping guy was very friendly and made the beds really nicely. Showering was a pleasure because the water was very hot and shower pressure very good. I agree the breakfast room is a bit stuffy but the omelettes they cooked to order were lovely and I was very happy with the service. The roof pool area has an unbeatable view over the Nile to the West Bank and is a great place to soak up the sun. Most other hotel guest were quiet, greying Britons who seemed civilised and nice.

If you sit on the balcony, ladies will attract the calls of caleche drivers from the street and also they pester you when you leave the hotel. Nevertheless I still think it's a great place to stay and I felt very comfortable. I can't comment on the food other than breakfast but Luxor has lots of places to eat, many right behind the hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a Nile view! It's priceless especially in the evening when the West Bank is a...

What is wrong with the English..we read the reviews for this hotel and chose it over another hotel and went..positives as always first then..weather lovely, views stunning, staff very friendly, tv good and bed very comfortable..but the food..what lies you people writing your reviews have written..the clientelle of this hotel are mostly british northerners and they have a kind of year-in-year out return rate..lovely people..but very little culinary tastes or experience in the kitchen..if they like the food on offer at St Josephs..we have never tasted such badly cooked, bland and sparse food..they have tried to perfect english dishes for the english guests and got it really wrong.. a whole menu of getting it wrong (don't let the variety fool you like it did us into looking forward to each taste sensation you might wish to try each day) steak pie with pastry which would be better suited filling a whole in my wall..we were so disappointed and actually dreaded going for meals...the breakfast is dire too...no variety and the worst of food..cardboard tasting cereal, natural yoghurt when it is just as cheap to buy flavoured..wow just writing this review brings back the taste nightmare that is this hotel..if you want good food please pay little more for a better hotel..but if you have lost the taste in your buds or have no idea of what good food should taste off..well this is your dream hotel so step right in..and to all you returning guests who keep on writing positive review after review..stop lying!!

Room Tip: noisy wherever you are as on main road
