“Great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We spent two weeks in this hotel in January 2012 and had a very pleasant stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful especially Nagha and Michael around the swimming pool area.
The rooms were serviced sometimes twice daily and towels and bed linen were changed daily if requested.
There are several restaurants in the hotel serving ok food but we found the best by far was the Aladdin Egyptian restaurant situated next to the pool area. The food was Egyptian, freshly cooked and very tasty at a very reasonable price.
When leaving the hotel you will be instantly hassled by taxi drivers and kalesh cabs. I would not use the Kalesh cabs as the horses did not appear to be well cared for.
There is a great shop called Arkwrights which is owned by a Brit and all the goods are individually priced so you know what you are paying. We were ripped off a couple of times in Egyptian run shops and the prices are not usually displayed. Arkwrighrs sell good home made pasties and scones. Arkwrights and many of the better restaurants are located in the first turning on the right opposite of the hotel.
Always check the price with the taxi drivers before you travel as they will quote you double what you need to pay.
Puddleducks is a good restaurant and only a couple of hundred yards from the hotel.
We are returning to the hotel in September to spend a week at the hotel and a week cruising down the nile.

“A good stay in a place to be seen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We stayed in this hotel where nothing to to much of a bother for the friendly staff.
The service was excellent from the room to the restaurants and pool side facilities.
Well positioned for the sights of Luxor to those of the famous surrounding valley's and temples.

Room Tip: Rooms on the Southern and West sides get the sun

“Best in Luxor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Having seen a few of the other luxury hotels in Luxor we concluded that the Sonesta was probably the best choice for a twelve night stay for a number of reasons.

The Staff: Very friendly, esepcially by the pool side and in the Aladdin restaurant. The cleaning staff even made a little creature thing out of towels and left it on our bed. I guess some people might find that weird, but I liked it as a personal touch as most five star hotels lack a human quality.

Room: We had a standard side-Nile view double room. Massive comfy bed, no noise if you shut the balcony door (except 5am call to prayer, but come on - you're in Egypt) and the mini bar prices were the same as everywhere else in the hotel, so there was no guilt associated with having a cheeky minibar beer on your own balcony. The view from the balcony is absolutely stunning.

Food: Breakfast staff more functional than friendly, but I guess you don't tip breakfast staff. Breakfast itself is good quality and variety, and the pancake chef is very friendly. We tried all the restaurants and both thought Aladdin was the best, would even go so far as to say it has the best tagine (that we tried) in all of Luxor. Japanese was a bit pricey. As a note: The lounge bar make an excellent Bloody Mary.

Excursions: We booked most of these through the hotel to avoid hassel in the town and had a brilliant time. It was worth booking through the hotel for Valley of the Kings and the other westbank sights, but things like the Felluca ride and Luxor temple you can get for much cheaper outwith the hotel (you can walk to Luxor temple if you don't mind the hassel).

Poolside: The poolside was fairly quiet when we were there in November. No trouble finding somewhere to lounge and the pontoon out onto the Nile is what sets this hotel above all the others in Luxor. I could watch the boats drift about all day.

Altogether we stayed twelve nights and I didn't want to leave by the end. Yes, the hassel outside the hotel is, well, a hassel, but it's like that wherever you go in Luxor. If you're looking for a British Standard five star hotel in the sun then I would reccommend the Winter Palace. Or the Canary Islands.

Tip: If you're looking for a cost friendly alternative to eating in the hotel, 7 Days 7 Ways is a five minute walk and has really good food (and a cocktail bar upstairs)

We stayed at the Sonesta St George, early in December 2011. Having previously stayed at The Old Winter Palace the year before. Apart from the fact that what we paid at the Old Winter Palace would have bought The Sonesta St George, or at least a small part of it. We thought the Hotel was as good as it gets. Having booked a room for 3 including our 20 year old son home from uni, booked in to find out they had given us a double room and on questioning this they offered us a put up bed, my very diplomatic husband much to my dismay went down to speak very diplomatically (I dont think so) to the Manager, I waited patiently with my head under the pillow, he was back in less than ten mins, and said 'Give them an hour or two and they would sort something out. In less than 20 mins they had moved us to a Nile View Suite, things just got better and better. I would highly recommend this hotel, and look forward to returning. Excellent hotel and wonderful people.

Room Tip: Although we had a Nile view, we had no sun until late afternoon, would prefer a Southside sun all da...

“Cannot be bettered”

Just returned from another family holiday to the Sonesta In Luxor, without doubt the hotel maintains an up market approach to things without the tiresome snobbery and attention to rules of other leading 5 star rated hotels in the city.
It is and will hopefully remain a family and couples orientated hotel catering for all tastes, the hotel is very well situated and the staff very honest and friendly, head of house keeping Usama is a complete Gentlemen in every way and he personally goes out of his way to ensure the stay is both memorable and fulfilling in every way.
Meal times are good relaxed and of a high standard, staff are attentive without being ovrly in your face, poolside is clean and well maintained including the much used and welcoming Jaccuzzi's which are in use whatever the monthly temperature.

To be recommended without question.

Room Tip: Ensure you get either a city view, Nile view or a side view overlooking the neigbouring Lotus Hotel...
