Having seen a few of the other luxury hotels in Luxor we concluded that the Sonesta was probably the best choice for a twelve night stay for a number of reasons.
The Staff: Very friendly, esepcially by the pool side and in the Aladdin restaurant. The cleaning staff even made a little creature thing out of towels and left it on our bed. I guess some people might find that weird, but I liked it as a personal touch as most five star hotels lack a human quality.
Room: We had a standard side-Nile view double room. Massive comfy bed, no noise if you shut the balcony door (except 5am call to prayer, but come on - you're in Egypt) and the mini bar prices were the same as everywhere else in the hotel, so there was no guilt associated with having a cheeky minibar beer on your own balcony. The view from the balcony is absolutely stunning.
Food: Breakfast staff more functional than friendly, but I guess you don't tip breakfast staff. Breakfast itself is good quality and variety, and the pancake chef is very friendly. We tried all the restaurants and both thought Aladdin was the best, would even go so far as to say it has the best tagine (that we tried) in all of Luxor. Japanese was a bit pricey. As a note: The lounge bar make an excellent Bloody Mary.
Excursions: We booked most of these through the hotel to avoid hassel in the town and had a brilliant time. It was worth booking through the hotel for Valley of the Kings and the other westbank sights, but things like the Felluca ride and Luxor temple you can get for much cheaper outwith the hotel (you can walk to Luxor temple if you don't mind the hassel).
Poolside: The poolside was fairly quiet when we were there in November. No trouble finding somewhere to lounge and the pontoon out onto the Nile is what sets this hotel above all the others in Luxor. I could watch the boats drift about all day.
Altogether we stayed twelve nights and I didn't want to leave by the end. Yes, the hassel outside the hotel is, well, a hassel, but it's like that wherever you go in Luxor. If you're looking for a British Standard five star hotel in the sun then I would reccommend the Winter Palace. Or the Canary Islands.
Tip: If you're looking for a cost friendly alternative to eating in the hotel, 7 Days 7 Ways is a five minute walk and has really good food (and a cocktail bar upstairs)
