In our experience, the Sofitel Karnak Hotel holds a 5-star ranking solely on the basis of its amenities, not on its rooms, which we would rate 3-stars, European style. The hotel has a large swimming pool, a separate “kids pool,” several shops, bar, large dining room, a bar and restaurant near the Nile, and (apparently) tennis courts and spa. However, the rooms are dated, with “old fashioned” TVs, worn bedspreads, scuffed furniture, and a generally tired look. Most annoying was the bathtub and shower arrangement. The tub surface does not slope inward so the shower water goes from the tub surface onto the bathroom floor and a wet mess. We asked for an received extra bathmats and towel, which were delivered almost immediately, to compensate for this. By rolling up towels on either end of the tub and directing them inward, we were able to control the flow of the water. The room came with a safe, small round table, desk, sitting chair and desk chair. Our room was on the ground floor and appeared to have a small outside sitting area which we did not use. We heard some noise from people walking upstairs or next door, but fortunately, these noises did not persist. We had single beds, rather than a double or queen. Breakfast was a large buffet, but when we went early, numbers of items were not out and, in some cases, it looked as though the bread from the previous morning was in the basket by the toaster. Breakfast included an omelet bar, fruits, breads and sweet rolls of all types, vegetables, Egyptian breakfast foods, grilled tomatoes, etc. The hotel has free wifi in the lobby. It is located about 4 kilometers outside of Luxor, making it a taxi or van ride to the temples and souk. There is a shuttle to the other Sofitel at the other end of Luxor, but it seems to run only twice a day. Cabs are easy to get from the lobby. The reservations were recommended and made by our tour operator, Your Egypt Tours. Apparently, they select this hotel because there are few 5 star hotels in Luxor.
Room Tip: If you are there when it seems busy, be sure to ask for a quiet room. From our limited experience...
