Rooms: When we first arrived, we were taken to a lovely room but unfortunately the door did not lock properly. We approached reception and the manager instantly upgraded us to a 'suite' which had fantastic views across the Nile, where one could spend hours watching the local Nubians play and take in the beautiful scenery. In addition, throughout our stay some of the most beautiful flowers were arranged in our room on a daily basis - a thoughtful touch.
Overall, the rooms are dated, they are not modern and are a little 'frayed around the edges', but they are clean and adequate. However, they are excellent value for money - for those who leave negative reviews, you should acquaint yourselves with the expression 'you get what you pay for'.
Pool: The pool area is very quiet and peaceful. The hotel was very quiet when we were there and had no problem finding sunbeds. The pool attendants were very helpful and provided towels. However avoid sunbathing near the opening steps of the Italian restaurant, as its difficult to relax with the flow of waiters constantly rushing by. Note, the pool bar is not in use due to the lack of customers though the waiters will bring drinks and snacks to your table. The pool itself is a good size, the water was nice and clean, though one tip would be to clean the pool tiles as they are a tad dated.
In general, the pool area was very pretty, lizards running around your toes and birds chirping. The views of the Nile and the flowers are breathtaking. Take lots of pics.
Hotel: The hotel itself is a bit dated, so don't go expecting a palace. However, what you will get is a friendly hotel, that will meet your needs if your expectations are not too high. Any problem you do experience, if any, is immediately rectified by the manger, who goes out of his way to help and is truly a lovely man.
Hotel Grounds: The gardens are splendid. You can spend much time perusing the local plants and wildlife. There is an array of the most exotic looking flowers and they smell wonderful in the evenings - take plenty mosquito repellant with you. One evening whilst exploring in the the gardens we were met by a gardener who spoke little English. He had noted our interest at the plants and initiated we followed him. He led us into the most beautiful allotment, where there were and arrangement of plants, trees, shrubs and fruits being grown, all of which were used in the hotels kitchens. *Note the lemon juice is freshly made from the hotels lemons :) As expected in Egypt, we badly assumed the gardener wanted a tip, however at the end of our tour he gave me a flower and when we tried to handover some notes, he refused. Instead, he expressed that he saw us as friends. He was a wonderful man and always waved when we saw him during our stay.
Shops: ***AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE****** However, should you choose to 'run the gauntlet' the do so at your own peril. We made the mistake of walking past and were immediately asked to come in, where you from? We said we would maybe pop in at some stage during our stay, but this was a big mistake. Each time we saw the stall holders, one man in particular, he would approach saying we broke a promise. we explained we would pop in if it was convenient for us, on our terms, yet this fell on deaf ears. One day he even hassled us at the pool! Beware - the hotel claims that the shops are independent and that they are not representing the hotel. However, they fail to miss the immediate connection. This man has unfortunately put me of visiting the hotel in the future.
Another independent man working at the hotel is Nasser. He is the 'tour specialist'. We sadly booked a rile cruise to return to back to Luxor...and it did not turn out to be a pleasant experience. Stick to your booking agent or use Memphis Travel (fantastic guys).
Food: The food was surprisingly good and we have eaten far worse at some of the most amazing hotels. The fresh pasta dishes in the Italian restaurant is great and the salads are very tasty. All is reasonable priced. Though do expect a bit of a wait if ordering from the pool or the Italian as the food is cooked in the main kitchen and takes time to be brought to you (but its always piping hot). Again, a tip would be to lower the price of glasses of wine. Its currently priced at about £5 a glass (and a tiny glass at that). Its far too expensive considering its price in other surrounding hotels. I feel if the drink prices were lower, people would sernd more time in the lobby instead of going by boat over to Aswan town.
In conclusion the hotel is perfect if you are traveling to Aswan on a budget. It could do with a makeover, but its still quaint and beautiful in its ancient way. The grounds more than make up for anything that the hotel lacks. The boat over the the island the hotel sits on is an experience in itself!
Thanks to the manager who looked after us and the lovely helpful staff. :)
