I only stayed at this hotel for one night, and so my review is based on a short-term stay. Located on Elephantine Island on the Nile River, guests reach the hotel by passenger ferry. This makes for quite a secluded and safe place away from the city, which has its usual host of aggressive street hawkers.
The rooms and grounds are clean and modern, though the décor reminds me a bit of the 1960s Bob Hope movie “I’ll Take Sweden”. By this I mean that the architecture is more horizontal than vertical. This could be due to the influence of the European company Moevenpick, which before this trip I had only associated with ice cream. I was visiting this hotel in Jan 2012, and the tourist numbers were way down, so the place felt even emptier than it looked.
All I really remember about the rooms were the odd faucets in the bathroom. Call me dense, but it took me some time to distinguish the knob from the spout. And the shower stall was just plain silly with a partial glass protector, almost guaranteeing that your bathroom floor would get wet. Oh well, when in Sweden …
Dinner and the breakfast buffet were acceptable but not exceptional. There is an observation tower on the 13th floor where you can have afternoon tea and watch the sunset. The views up and down the Nile show the many tour boats that ply the waters in a typical high season. Someone told me that of the 290 cruise boats normally operating only about 10% of these were running and perhaps at only one-third or one-half capacity. So the season is bad in 2012 for the industry, but great for those of us seeing the temples and visiting the resorts.
Overall, Moevenpick Aswan is rated as a 5-star hotel but for me it felt a bit more like a 3-star place. It’s definitely one of the better hotels in Aswan, and the food is safe to eat. If you were to stay longer you’d find a beautiful infinity pool for relaxing and enjoying the sun. Also, visit the Botanical Gardens on a neighbouring island, where the grounds are very peaceful and pleasant. Ciao.
