I was a solo woman traveler and got royally sick of one leering desk clerk, and he kind of soured me on the rest of the experience. Most of the staff had little or no English so I was steered wrong about the ability to get to Abu Simbel. I never got there. At the back overlooking a very noisy alley that went all night, I got a room with rock-hard twin beds, no tub, as shown in the pictures here (I didn't know about this site), a shower with no curtain so the room was splattered (but there was plenty of hot water and the floor dried quickly). The location right on the Nile is handy and central, and right above the bank for converting cash. Breakfast is just an egg and bread, and you have to ask for more coffee, but you'll get it with a few more pounds. It was cheap overall but I met people who were happier with a much cheaper place I never checked out called the Boomerang.
