Memphis tours arranged for an early check in for me and the hotel accommodated that request very efficiently. My room was on the first floor overlooking the pool. The room was quite spacious with a very large closet and lots of shelving. There was a working safe, a great TV with working remote, a little fridge, two beds, lots of lamps and lighting fixtures, a little sitting area with a table ( it was great for teatime for two people) , desk, and various other pieces of furniture that seemed to fit in. The bathroom was huge, big tub, working shower, lots of big towels but had to ask for facecloths. Lots of shampoo, soap and conditioners so you dont' need to bring them for this part of your journey. I did not use the hotel water to brush my teeth but it seemed perfect for other purposes. The maid was very efficient and often came to see if I needed anything. The room service was quite good and only once the service delivery took some time ( almost 30 minutes). I would order tea or a nescafe every day around 3 ish and request a large container of boiled water with the nescafe or tea bag. It was always accommodated. The charge was around 10 or 15LE and then I would tip the rest of 20 LE. The breakfast room was large and bright. The coffee cups were so small you could only get a few gulps in there. That was ok because there was an unlimited amount of coffee. Lots of juice, hot cream for coffee, many different breads and pastries, yogurt, fruit plates, cereal, cheeses of all kinds, Egyptian Salad ( pickeled carrots and some type of raddish), eggs of all kinds, sliced up weiners (I missed bacon) and an assortment of potato dishes, french toast, Egyptian beans (yummy), and some grated carrots and some salads on another counter. Lots of foods, perhaps not the foods that we are used to coming from the Americas but it was sustaining.
The pool was nice but very few people out there....there were so many flies! I went out for about 20 minutes and then gave up. The hotel does spray the grounds but to no avail.
Staff are quite friendly. The reception was good. The restaurant staff looked so tired and over worked and yet managed to do a great job.
There is an overpriced gift shop on site. They wanted 240LE ( 40US) for a large Cleopatra size necklace and I got it at the Khan for 100LE. There is a money exchange or a bank open 24 hours a day. There is also an overpriced jewelry store on site as well. You have to buy internet cards from the reception for the internet room. They are only for 30 minutes or an hour....one shot, use it up or lose it , and the internet is quite expensive.
The best aspect of this hotel was that it was only 20 minutes walking distance from the Giza Pyramids. Walk out the front door, turn right to the main road and turn left and keep walking...the pyramids will come into full view. There is a hotel at the foot of the pyramids called Menna House and you are allowed to have a lunch in there or buy a coffee,,,it's quite beautiful.
Don't use the taxi services from the lobby as they wanted 200LE to arrange a driver for Saqquera, The Pyramids , over the bridge to The Egyptian Museum. We thought that was too pricey so we just stepped outside and asked a cab driver - Abdallah- how much he would charge for the whole day of driving. It was a 100LE and he felt like he won the lottery for that money. So he drove us around and we paid him well and all tipped him about 10 LE each. We saw him the next day and he said he reported back home with the money and tips and his wife was so grateful. He was a good guy.....I hired him again to drive us out to the Citadel, Cairo Tower and The Khan and it was only 70 LE ( 11US approx).
Tipping is a major part of the Egyptian Culture. Many Egyptians tip other Egyptians and they don't make a portion of what we make for salaries in the Americas or Europe. I also left a little something; we don't have too but the service was pretty good and the hotel served it's purpose. Our standards are much higher than Egyptian standards but still, I would stay there again for the 38.00US a night that I paid.
Funny Story: one morning I heard this noise outside my window at 6:00am. I got dressed and went downstairs and it was a young lad cutting the few pieces of grass . I said to him, why so early? He said the hotel likes to have this done before the tourists wake up...Ok......................... nice lad.
Room Tip: Ask for the fourth floor , you can see the tips of the pyramids.
