“Empty and Tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

When I visited in January the hotel was less than half full. Arriving late, we were taken by a circuitous route to our room, consequently, next morning we had to follow the confusing signs to get to breakfast.
Our room was large, with plenty of storage and a patio in front. The bathroom ws tired looking and some tiles were cracked. However it was clean. The towels were tired as well and not the quality you would expect from Movenpick. It was very cold at night so we appreciated the heat facility on the air conditioning.
Breakfast was a buffet, but with omelettes cooked for you. There was a wide choice, but set out in different areas of a huge room, so you could easily miss some options. We ate in the hotel one evening at the buffet, again a wide choice. The food was average quality. The staff were pleasant. Speaking to other visitors the Thai restaurant had better quality food and was better value for money. The Italian closes early unfortunately. The rooftop cafe serves good coffee and the view to the Pyramids is worth the effort of climbing up several flights of stairs past the empty lift shaft. When we went we were the only people up there!
The lobby is spacious, but other guests smoking made it an unpleasant area to sit in.
Proximity to Pyramids useful and hopefully if the Egyptian Museum moves here it will be ideally located for avoiding the Cairo traffic.

“Tired hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Our family of four ( 6 and 8 year old kids) stayed there for three nights in December. While the hotel claims to be a 5 star Moevenpick. This hotel is definitely not in the same class as the other Movenpicks. The rooms are small and tired looking. The entire hotel needs a total makeover in order to bring it into the same level as a 5 star Moevenpick.
The Thai restaurant was closed when we go there and we had dinner at the restaurant/coffee shop. The food quality was poor and not up to the mark for what we paid. SInce there are no pother restaurants around there make sure you do not count on walking out to get some food. The hotel is fairly close to the Pyramids and that is the only thing going for it.

“Moevenpick Giza”

Our family of four (youngest 7 years) stayed here for best part of a week over New Year. Yes, it is a good hour from the centre (owing to terrible traffic rather than distance) but that, to us was a good thing and it is just so close to the pyramids which were our main reason for this trip. We had been worried about going to Egypt given the recent protests but it was absolutely fine - and for us had a bonus in that the sites were all relatively quiet. The staff at the hotel are all welcoming and helpful. Our connecting rooms were very comfortable (the beds were good) and clean and everything worked (tea and coffee facilities might have been nice though). And it was just so quiet - it was hard to believe we were surrounded by the hustle and bustle of a big city. The rooms are set in one-storey 'bungalows' in very pleasant grounds. The swimming pool is clean and well-tended and we used it every day. The foyer is very welcoming with a nice bar and a little patisserie/ice-cream area. We were on half-board and it has to be said that the food in the orangerie buffet restaurant was terrible!!! (I would have put this in italics or underlined it but can't find the option!) Maybe it is part of a cynical plan to get you to eat in the excellent Thai restaurant or the pool-side pizzeria - which we did! A plus point of this hotel is the roof-top terrace with views of the pyramids which is a very pleasant place of an evening. A special mention to the hotel for helping my son and I celebrate our birthdays so well - flowers, cakes and swans made out of towels - fantastic! One word of warning, the in-hotel limousine/taxi service 'Misr Travel' - you have to be firm in what you want/require as if it does not fit in with what they want they will try extremely hard to put you off - 'the museum closes at 4pm' - the Egyptian museum now closes at 7pm. However, we did luck-in with a good driver at the end who drove us practically right to the door of the museum and waited for us and it was definitely worth the hour-plus to get across town and negotiate (a very quiet) Tahrir square. Oh, and Saqqara - fantastic site, but our then driver told us the Serapeum was closed and we believed him (it wasn't) - one for next time then!

“Loved the lobby. Wish the rooms were as nice....but very disappointed.”

How can I say this?? The people of Egypt are so very nice and eager to please you. The Movenpick employees were delightful. But once you got past the very lovely lobby, the rooms were quite old and shabby. Really in need of a refurbishment.

This is a good place to stay if you have kids that just go in and out of the pool and room.

My room had 2 gooey, icky, sticky spots on the carpet that I had to cover with bath towels. Didn't want to walk barefoot in that room.

The buffet was a hit and miss sort of situation. We had one wonderful dinner and one fabulously fresh breakfast there....and then the day of check out....disaster--all old food. Old bread....old dinner items....it was New Years Day, so I guess no one wanted to cook...and we did not want to eat the terrible stale food they set out.

I wish we would of spent the extra money and upgraded the hotel.

“Close to Pyramids”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

Hotel is situated close to Giza pyramids. It is a single story hotel with all standard rooms on ground floor but pyramids cannot be viewed from there. Only roof top cafe offers a view of pyramids. The rooms were clean and spacious and the service was acceptable. The rooms did not have tea coffee maker. Buffet breakfast was ok and seemed repetitive on 3rd day.Overall ok though falling short of 5 star standards.

Room Tip: Many Rooms are situated far from the reception
