Stayed in this hotel with a tour group - once at the beginning and at the end.
The secret here is to obtain a room near the top floor, the higher up you go the better the rooms are.
Yes the smell is the downside of staying here - not sure why the owner does not address this problem - it is really awful and becomes a problem after a while.
It is situated in an are where local people live and house their animals. Interesting as one can see how the locals live and go about their everyday life. If you go up on the roof of the hotel, you can see the animals on the roof tops of the houses where they are put for the night, or sometimes they just lay outside, either side of the hotel. Stray dogs also scavenge in the rubbish piles scattered outside the various coffee shops and houses on the same street front as the hotel. The service from the staff is excellent, friendly, helpful, if at times a bit over the top, by ringing or knocking on your door to see if all is alright. Ladies on their own should maybe be aware of staff following you to your room if they are in the lift with you, maybe just a friendly gesture.
Try not to be given a room at the front of the hotel, as there is some sort of factory over the road and the curtains don't always block out the light coming from this 24/7 plant, and then of course there is the constant traffic and honking - it never stops. My curtain was almost all coming off it hooks and my room was lite up like a Christmas Tree all night.
Also every time I opened my fridge it almost toppled over - but I got used to catching it.
For a budget hotel, this is not a bad option just remember :-
It is not as close to the pyramids as you maybe led to believe
Don't get a front facing room
Try to get a top floor room
Make sure your curtains block out the light
This will contribute to a pleasant stay - you will out sightseeing most of the day
It is not in business strip - but there are plenty of little supermarkets where you can stock up on water, juice, yogurt and there are also little fruit stalls about.
The ATM right outside the hotel is a great help and there are always lots and lots of tourist police around who are always watching you, especially if you are a female
Not sure why the hotel was built there as one really needs to get a taxi to go anywhere for sightseeing or to go out and eat. It really seems to be situated in a residential area with lots of rubble and rubbish lying around.
Got lots of good photos of people, animals and everyday Egyptian life.
The great thing this hotel has going for it are it's staff, can't fault them, They are a credit to the hotel
And yes their lobby is clean and a pleasant place to sit.
When I was there the guy that ran the bar/cafe was exceptional, very helpful and accommodating when taking your order for a drink/coffee or snack.
