“A place of last resort”

I booked this hotel and transport from Cairo airport using the hotel's home page. Things did not get off to a good start with the taxi not at the airport for me, and when I reached the hotel my reservation was not known about. However as it was winter a room was not a problem. Outside the arcade where the hotel entrance is found, the hotel sign was in a very poor state. The list lobby was dirty as was the lift call panel and that is indicative of what is to come. The room was very dated, the bed linen minimal, the drawers of the chest of drawers had been nailed together and the wardrobe had not been cleaned out in ages. The room was very cold and was warmed up using a wall mounted convector. Hot water was supposedly available 6hrs a day, the shower did not have a curtain which resulted in water going everywhere including over the loo roll! The "bathroom" furniture was very old with rotting window frames. The breakfast is 3 white finger rolls with a portion of jam and processed cheese with tea or coffee. The tea/coffee/milk jugs are impossible to pour from! The only redeeming features are the hotel bar where the bar-host is a real pleasure to talk to and the hotels location.

“minus 5 stars”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

I have stayed at this hotel more than 3 times and my final visit put me off for ever.
The cleaning staff knocked on my door every 5 minutes, (literally) looking for jobs to do and hence tips. It got so frequent I lost my rag with them.
The final thing that means I will never stay here again is that I was subject to the very old scam of them loading my suitcase on the roof of the car and removing it as we left, leaving me one suitcase down. (They knew I'd been on a business good purchasing trip). We drove to the airport and when we arrived we discovered I'd been scammed. The driver took us part way back to the hotel, but we had to return or I'd miss my flight. Thankfully all the valuables were in not in my stolen case, but someone in Cairo has my dirty underwear!!! This happened in 2006, but I've sadly not forgotten!!!!
I have to agree with the others regarding the creepy reception staff. But I did love the cronkly old elevator.

Room Tip: Find another hotel.

“Cheap, excellent location, would definitely go back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

Stayed here for a total of 4 nights in June. It's about a 5 minute walk from Tahrir Square, the main square in Cairo, and it is well signposted from the Sharia Talaat Harb. About a E£25 taxi from the bus station in the evening, and E£50 to the airport.

The hotel is opposite an excellent fast food outlet, and next to banks and refreshment stands, and when I was there, all were used to a great extent.

The hotel itself is small on initial inspection, reached via an elevator from street level. The staff are friendly and love to talk and give advice to travellers and always offer to make your stay the best. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, but the bathroom did leave something to be desired. It was small, and with hot water only available from 6-11am, one is slightly limited in cleansing options at some times.

The breakfast was average, with mint tea and bread with jam available for free, yet items like orange juice and eggs [omelette] were a E£7 surcharge.

Overall, the price you pay for the location that you get should make anyone want to stay in the Lotus Hotel in Cairo.

Room Tip: Ask for one facing away from the road, as it is very loud.

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2011

I spent a lot of time (more than two months) at Lotus Hotel. It was good value for the money, and I would definitely stay here again.

The staff are always friendly and helpful. Everyone -- desk staff, managers, housekeepers, restaurant staff -- does a good job, aims to please, and makes guests feel welcome.

I took a room without en-suite bathroom or air conditioning (it was winter, so a/c was not important). It was clean and reasonably comfortable, and there were no problems with the en-suite sink. The shared bathrooms were usually clean, although there were persistent problems with the toilets (overflowing, leaking, etc) that seemed to take a very long time to get fixed. There are many shared bathrooms to choose from, so you always have other options down the hall or around the corner if one particular bathroom isn't up to par. There was almost always hot water available during the stated hours, although it could take a LONG time (up to fifteen minutes) for the water to get hot.

The breakfast is decent, and the restaurant service is fine.

There is free wi-fi Internet in the hotel lobby, but the signal is not strong enough to reach the guest rooms. There are several Internet cafes within walking distance as well.

The location, five minutes' walk from Tahrir Square, is absolutely unbeatable.

You can book tours and excursions through the hotel if you like; the hotel staff did not pressure me at all to book any activities through them, but they were happy to help on the occasions where I asked for it. I appreciated the no-pressure approach a lot.

I did not have any noise-related complaints, even though the hotel is located in the middle of bustling downtown; not much traffic noise was audible from my room, or at least not enough noise to be a problem.

Cairo is a fantastic city, and Lotus Hotel is a great place to use as your home base if you want to be downtown and don't want to spend lots of money. I can definitely recommend it.
