“fantastic hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed twice, and for several nights, in this hotel during our visit to Burma.

The very first night we had terrible noise from a discotheque in front of our rooms, so, the next day, we asked for, and got, a quiet room. The second time we got a quiet room, because we specifically asked. So if you want to book a room, do not forget to enquire about this.

Rooms were spacious and clean, the bathroom is very good. There is a flat-screen television and, very important, a safe in the wardrobe. You can hide a laptop in it.

There is an internet corner with two computers, which are very often occupied and have rather used keyboards - sometimes difficult to find your characters. There is WiFi in the lobby, so you can use your laptop or iPad from there. Do not forget however that at the time of writing of this review (February 2012), internet in Burma still is very s l o w, and sometimes you do not get connection to Gmail at all.

Breakfast is absolutely gorgeous, you can get good meals at noon, and dinner is also of very good quality (do not forget to try the excellent Burmese wines !).

Staff is very friendly and helpful, although from time to time there could be a difficulty in understanding each other.

It is next to a beautiful garden with pond, near the zoological garden and very near to the Shwedagon pagoda.

We were extremely satisfied with our staying in this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room, ask specifically for a room away from the discotheque.

“Think again for booking”

I just left Kandawgyi and it is the first time I was happy to leave a place I had chosen to vacation at. To start - our first room had black mold on the shower curtain and tiles missing from the shower ceiling- when asked to change rooms the hotel agreed and then moved all our stuff while we were out touring including taking everything out of our safe - minus 100$! Our next room was next to two rooms undergoing construction with loud noise and paint fumes and no hot water at all. To top the experience off the hotel resturant gave some of our group food poisioning which we later found out many other hotel guests had as well. I would highly suggest looking into another hotel - possibly Traders - until they can get it together. While the grounds look great most staff are new and poorly trained

Room Tip: The connecting rooms don't have locks so be careful - and delux just means you get a view. The...

“Great hotel, including dinosaur!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We checked into this hotel as part of our first night in Yangon, at the start of our trip.

The reception/check in was smooth, fast & relatively efficient.

The room was good. Clean, large with a good TV to watch.

The hotel is placed in large grounds, including a dinosaur sculpture in the garden! You get a great view of the lake & the royal barge from the garden too.

We tried the cappuccino in the lounge & it was pretty good. Decent coffee is not common in Myanmar, as we found out.

Breakfast was good in that it started from 4 am (Many flights to up-country Myanmar leave at 6am)! That is real customer service! While breakfast was adequate; it was pretty basic for such a good hotel. The selection and quality was dissappointing.

Overall, a good place to stay we would recommend.

“Great Gardens and Surrroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We agree with other reviewers that the rooms are a bit disappointing especially on the third floor and without lake views. We also agree that there is a problem ( not huge) with noise from the corridor. And our room had a definite smell of drains which was bad on one of the two nights we spent in the hotel.

On the other hand, the gardens are lovely as is the area for sitting out behind the lobby where we passed a couple of very agreeable hours as we recovered from jet lag. The breakfast buffet is very ample. The staff are agreeable and good at sourcing taxis. And the location is as good as any in Yangon with the additional plush of the park around the lake outside ( cost $2 but well worth it for a nice sunset walk. We had a comparator hotel as we stayed in the Savoy on our return nights in Yangon and found that hotel very noisy indeed. So, in spite of some reservations, we would probably stay in the Kandawgy Palace on our next visit to Yangon.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view

“Lush gardens and spectacular lake view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

This hotel is located on Kandawgyi lake with its beautiful views of lotus covered waters. The hotel is set in a lush garden with three pools nestled in among the trees (two under renovation until March 2012).
The lobby is marble and wood carvings with a pleasant bar area. The desk staff spoke good English and were welcoming and professional. I would advise you request an upstairs room with a view of the lake as some rooms can be dark and uninviting.
The rooms were spacious and pleasant with a traditional hotel room set out. Beds were comfortable and the pillows reasonable. Sound insulation was a problem with people in the corridor easily heard even when not being too raucous. Perhaps the biggest problem in our room was that the corridor muzac seemed to leak through the air conditioner duct to be audibly annoying.

We experienced an issue similar to other guests, when you stay one night the management tend to place you in noisy rooms without a lake view.

A modern TV was in the room with cable. The shower over the bath was strong and the plumbing worked well.
Breakfast was a large spread of average food, at times not the freshest, even early in the morning.

Remember this place DOES NOT TAKE CREDIT CARDS. The Strand and the Parkroyal do take credit cards in the bars and restaurants for non hotel guests if you need it.

Room Tip: Lake View on level 3
