“Good colonial hotel at half the price of The Strand”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012 via mobile

This is a lovely, atmospheric hotel in an old colonial house. Much of the furniture and fittings are original. The staff are friendly and let us check in early, at 10am, after a long flight. We were also delighted to be upgraded to a suite. However, on both days we stayed - at the beginning and end of our trip - they had trouble finding our reservation, leading us to worry that we'd have nowhere to stay. It shouldn't be that hard to have a ready list each day of expected guests.

The pool is welcome after a hot day's sightseeing, and is a useful oasis in a bustling city. Rooms with pool views are the nicest.

The bar is great, but we didn't try the restaurant. We had a very early flight, but the staff still brought us a breakfast box at 4.30am, which was a good touch.

On our second stay, the 'hot' water was only lukewarm.

“Nice ambiance but better values elsewhere in Yangon”

We were really excited to stay at the savoy during our recent trip to Yangon, but I found the experience a bit average. The decor of the hotel was nice and you really got that colonial feel, but beyond that we could have been staying anywhere.

When we reserved, we requested a king bed room. Upon entering our room, we had two twin beds. While the staff promptly changed our room for us, we should have been given the correct room to begin with or been asked to recnfirm our preference at check in.

The breakfast was a little limited in options and not the standard I expect for a five-star hotel. I would have stayed elsewhere if I could do it again.

“Poisoned by cigarette smoke!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Recently stayed at this over-rated and over-priced hotel. The room was pleasantly furnished but nothing special and reeked of cigarette smoke despite our demanding a non-smoking room. Food was pretty mediocre and a limited menu. Over-priced for Yangon. If you want a good meal, go across the road to one of the other restaurants outside the hotel. Ventured into the bar but had to leave as it was packed full of chain smoking and inconsiderate smokers blowing their foul smoke in all directions. The air conditioning and extractor fans were totally inadequate. We decided to complain to the management. The staff pointed to the so-called manager - another chain smoking German who was holding court at the bar with his buddies - all frantically puffing away on cancer-sticks. We realised it was pointless and that non-smokers are unwelcome at this hotel. Would never stay here again under the current management.

Room Tip: If you are a non-smoker, stay away from this place.

“A Positive Experience”

Savoy Hotel...

The staff at the front desk were friendly and possessed good English skills, especially the young woman at the desk. Check in and check out were efficient. The room was large with a desk and a comfortable chair for reading. The wifi connection was free and fast.

We had Burmese friends visit us at tea time and the hotel staff went out of their way to provide an area and extra chairs so that we could converse.

Beds were comfortable. In sum, we had a very positive experience with this hotel.

“Pleasant, but outdated.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The rooms are comfortable, very clean, good maid service. Breakfast, at a 3 star level.
Dinner very good, enjoyed the Chicken with Crabmeat and Prawns, a very interesting dish.
Reception, very poor, no wake up calls, lack of proper information, poorly trained staff.

Avoid the Bar, Captains Lounge, occupied with heavy smokers and local Expats, getting very drunk and unpleasant.
The poolside, is very pleasant.

We would give this hotel a good 3 star ratiing.

Room Tip: 107 or 108, close to the poolside
