“Kinshasa: much more relaxing than you might expect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

The Grand Hotel is one of just a handful of international standard hotels in Kin. But it does what it says on the can; it's clean, comfortable, the rooms are relatively spacious, they have great views of the Congo River and the city, and the food is (just) up to international standard.
Yes it is expensive, but that's mainly due to the lack of competition.
DRC is a future destination. As the guidebooks say, you soak up the atmosphere in Kin rather than see specific sights. But unlike much of Africa the amount of hassle is low, and people on the streets are interested and interesting.

“Good for Business and good for Kinshasa”

If you are travelling on per diem and have a choice, this is a fairly consistant pick. It has wifi in the rooms (slow but works) and breakfast that is decent. They have a good pool with a great workout facility. A lot of people that live in Kinshasa have memberships to the facilities. There is a casino adjoining the main hotel that just re-opened its doors after a 3 month renovation. It is very nice and drinks and food are FREE as long as you are playing. Enjoy!

Room Tip: If you face the pool you will have music almost every night. It might bother you.

“The only nice thing is the food in the restaurant”

When in Congo, there isn't much choice in terms of accommodation. However, when an hotel charges over 250 USD a night, a traveller is entitled to expect certain standards... ranging from amenities to cleanliness. We were not looking for luxury, obviously, but simple value for money, i.e., we wanted to pay for what it was worth and not have the feeling of being ripped off...

“OK with several peculiarities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

The Grand Hotel will do, but do not expect a hotel of real international standard or comfort.

The rooms are OK; the bed and bathroom clean; you can have a rather impressive view of the Congo. It was quiet. Internet worked well enough.

The restaurants were insanely expensive for what they are. I do recommend the poolside restaurant where you can get some nice basics and a beer, with music and a rather fine sax player.

The pool is also very good for laps in the morning. Clean, clear and deep water. A bit hard to find the first time because of construction -- don't follow the signs.

One very strange thing in this hotel is that they ask for payment up front, even with a guarantee from the office. I had quite a discussion at the front desk but in the end they were reasonable and helpful.

Finally, be prepared for your trip. I forgot (or lost) the plug adapter for my electronics and paid more than $20 for a new one (the kind to make American plugs international) in one of the shops downstairs in the hotel

This is Kinshasa and you can't expect much. But the Grand Hotel profit handsomely of the situation and considering its price, it's better go somewhere else!
