“The only nice thing is the food in the restaurant”

When in Congo, there isn't much choice in terms of accommodation. However, when an hotel charges over 250 USD a night, a traveller is entitled to expect certain standards... ranging from amenities to cleanliness. We were not looking for luxury, obviously, but simple value for money, i.e., we wanted to pay for what it was worth and not have the feeling of being ripped off...

“OK with several peculiarities”

The Grand Hotel will do, but do not expect a hotel of real international standard or comfort.

The rooms are OK; the bed and bathroom clean; you can have a rather impressive view of the Congo. It was quiet. Internet worked well enough.

The restaurants were insanely expensive for what they are. I do recommend the poolside restaurant where you can get some nice basics and a beer, with music and a rather fine sax player.

The pool is also very good for laps in the morning. Clean, clear and deep water. A bit hard to find the first time because of construction -- don't follow the signs.

One very strange thing in this hotel is that they ask for payment up front, even with a guarantee from the office. I had quite a discussion at the front desk but in the end they were reasonable and helpful.

Finally, be prepared for your trip. I forgot (or lost) the plug adapter for my electronics and paid more than $20 for a new one (the kind to make American plugs international) in one of the shops downstairs in the hotel

This is Kinshasa and you can't expect much. But the Grand Hotel profit handsomely of the situation and considering its price, it's better go somewhere else!

“Pas de grand choix”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

If you do business in Kinshasa its the Memling or the Grand Hotel. Security first in this city. Arrange a shuttle to the hotel because a taxi ride is 75 $.

One thing that changed since January 2011at the Grand Hotel is that he internet access is no longer included in the price of the room. Now you will be charged 15 $/hour, 25$/day, 80 dollars/week.
The breakfast is ok but expensive (28) Dollars - try to negotiate.
It is not recommended to walk the streets (especially after dark) to find a cyber. There is nothing and anyway, it will cost you dear.

The Grand Hotel is a good place to stay...there are secure lockers in the rooms.

In general, avoid the weekends if you need to sleep at night.

“Hotel is acceptable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

I stayed one night on business. The hotel service was acceptable at all levels. There is nothing fancy about the hotel, but was relatively clean, but not new. In the US, this hotel would be under renovation; in Africa, it was average. The food was good at the restaurant.
Prices at the restaurant and stores in the hotel were high (lunch was $32 US; shirts were $220 US - my bags failed to arrive with me).
US currency is accepted in the country, but must be in perfect condition - no tears, etc.
There is no shuttle. Taxi from the airport worked but appears less than reliable. I used the blue and white cabs and avoided the drivers touting for business. It was $50 US - but bargaining was difficult because I speak no French.
