“Expensive but convenient for airport and generally very nice.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

I have stayed many times at Gateway for work travel. It is convenient for transit - being so close to the airport - which means fast pick-up and drop-off, something that is very useful and not the same for other hotels in the city (for which I have waited over an hour). Usually Gateway will do pick-ups in 5 minutes and because they are close you can check-out later and know you will get dropped off within 5 minutes - a bonus when you have to check-in 2 hours early even for a domestic flight.

The price is not at all good and while new parts of the hotel have opened up, this still does not justify the prices. The old rooms are reasonable for older rooms but are not fantastic and do not deserve rates of above $150, let alone the asking price of above $250. The newer rooms are quite good although I found cockraoches in both new and old rooms.
I like the restaurant and bar areas and the pool is nice to look at although not private enough for me to want to swim in - however the people in the pool always seem to be enjoying themselves. :)

The buffet is usually very nice although not the cheapest option, but when you are hungry it is great.
The staff are very friendly and at least one reception staff remembered my name from a visit 3 months previous, which impressed me. They have been very helpful and quick to respond when I had a booking issue and polite when I have had to wait. I have been upgraded at least once when rooms were not available (their apratments are nice, though expensive. Good for a group)

Security wise it is very safe generally - which is important, however there is public access to the rooms (not in some hotels in POM) and some doors do not swing close properly when you leave the room. More than once I have thought it closed only to find I could push it open. Worth remembering.

The hotel sometimes messes things up - bookings, bills,

Thank you for your honest feedback, particularly since you have stayed at the Gateway Hotel several times previously.
We also appreciate your kind comments regarding our staff, and I will pass on your feedback.
In regards to insects or similar in rooms, we do have a monthly pest treatment carried out in all rooms, and we pay particular attention to daily room cleanliness. Our sincere apologies if there were any unwanted insects that made their way through into your room. Due to the location and climate here, it takes ongoing monitoring to ensure we minimise the presence of these pests.
Thank you also for passing on the location benifits of the Gateway Hotel and its complimentary transfer service.
We look forward to seeing you again in the future, and all your feedback has been well received.

Kind Regards,
Paul Davis

“Good value for money”

I stayed here for a week in November as I was attending a conference being held there.
The room was modern and well equiped and the A/C worked fine and apart from some noise outside coming from the staff areas overall quiet.

Accommodation in PNG is expensive however i think the Gateway offers good value for the rates charged and is certainly cheaper than my usual choice but then again not up to its standards either.

The staff are couteous and friendly and the restaurant was clean and the food fine however I did think the breakfast choice was a little restricted.

I would have no issues with staying here again.

“WAY overpriced but still very nice...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

It's true - what you pay for this hotel, is not worth it. It is crazy expensive - looking at $400USD for normal rooms... not even breakfast included! However I think Port Moresby is just nuts in general. However, Gateway Hotel - please include breakfast buffet in the price - that would be a decent, appreciated step..

The service is slow at the front desk - so just make sure you give yourself extra time or just try to take deep breaths and be patient. Also - ask for the duty manager if things are really not going anywhere - my experience with both DMs were really positive (Eugenia and... name has escaped me, on the night shift of the 5th Dec).

The food at the restaurant is really quite good (but also overpriced). Restaurant staff were really lovely and professional. Buffet breakfast could do with museli and yoghurt added in. Also the pool is great.

Finally - the rooms. I stayed in 726 - it was recently refurbished. Very clean, functional, great shower... only issue were the few loose tiles and internet wasn't 100%. (However foyer was being refurbished so the foyer didn't look great and was a bit tricky to wait in the foyer - but I expect that will finish soon.)

Room Tip: make sure you get a refurbished one (not sure how many are..)

“An Experience”

Recently I had to attend a meeting at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby. I elected to stay at the Gateway Hotel due to its proximity to the airport. The airside collection and delivery by shuttle bus is excellent. The hotel is reasonably clean but expensive being a captive market. The restaurant food is a bit monotonous and the menu appears not to have changed for several of months. They do an excellent chinese meal on Thursday and Friday lunch and it has a good pizza bar downstairs. The hotel is a secure as you can get in PNG.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the "7" series and make sure the room has a safe. Make sure the windows...

“Expensive and a bit shabby”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

Close to their airport - thats a plus. But the place has past its prime/sell by date. An odd mixture of new-ish looking parts, shabby attention to detail, odd decor, and a tired feeling about parts of it.

Check in was a tad officious but worked, the room (I was told I was in 'the old section') was big but well past its prime. Ducted aircon that didn't work (it was hot - after complaining about the broken aircon twice they eventually bought me a fan), dirty ceiling, rusted bathroom fittings and a big dead cockroach on the floor. Oh, and a sign that suggested not to leave door to balcony open (ie lock it!).

Parts of the hotel seem to have been revamped. A neat and up to date 'Departure Lounge' bar downstairs, but then across the lobby a little 'shop' that really has no reason to exist. Not even newspapers on sale there (but you can by chalk sticks by the box full, noodles and 'beef biscuits').

The swimming pool is nice - good size and clean; nice areas around it to have drinks etc.

ATM machine in the lobby that takes foreign cards.

Beware - internet access is very expensive. And staff did not even know the hotel's own email address when I asked if I could send something to them to print for me! Odd.

Not ideal for anything but a quick stopover, I'd say (or avoid).

Room Tip: If you are going to stay there ask in advance (if you can) for a 'new' room; I hear that the...
