“Not the place for comfort and safety”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

Our family's 3rd stay at this hotel. Its not a five star hotel but it was clean and we were able to cook etc. However, there is now a night club 2 doors over and there is no sleep at nights. The party ends around 6:00 am. The security guards are incapable of dealing with the clients of the neighbouring club - a gun was pulled on the guard - how safe does that make us?? We were awaken by this awful vibration in the room - it was the bass from the party that spilled out on to the streets surrounding the Cara Suites. The hotel said there is nothing they can do about it. However, they can let people know of the noise factor if they are using the hotel to get a good night's rest. That is no longer possible there. If you are looking for an all night party, then that would be the place for you. If you are looking for a comfortable, secure and clean place, Cara Suites is no longer that place. I am very disappointed as we were there for our mother's funeral and needed a place to sleep at night - we did not get any of that. The staff were making excuses and the security never heard a thing - that is because he was locked up inside --- more than likely sleeping. You would have had to have a hearing problem not to hear or feel the noise exploding in the rooms.
At $174.00 US per night, you would expect a little more than what we got. The rooms in our suite had black stuff on the walls, looked like mould or condensation in two different areas.
Would I go there again.... not as it is currently.... I would go again if things go back to the way there were 4 years ago and the night club - Gerry's is no longer its neighbour.

“It is OK.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

The staff were helpful and friendly.
The food was good.
Free internet was great.
Don't even think cable/satellite reception. It is there nominally. You get good reception from probably 3 channels.
While trying to take a nap during the day, the phone outside the room rang many times 9probably for the maid) and woke me up each time. It was loud.
It is showing signs of neglect. I saw many water-stained ceiling tiles and there seems to be a rough hodge-podge approach to repairs and maintenance.
I would probably stay there again.

“Used for day room purposes - perfectly OK”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2009

My partner and I took a day room here in advance of an overnight bus trip into the interior. (the bus departs from around the corner, so it was extremely convenient). The decor was sparse with linoleum floors and fluorescent lights, but the bed was large and comfortable and the shower worked well. Full kitchen in our suite... not sure if that's standard since I haven't seen any other rooms here. Clean and comfortable and adequate for our purposes.

Good cafe/restaurant and bar on-site; additional good food options within a block. Full service travel agency - Wilderness Explorers - is on-site, too, handling simple local tours all the way up to mutli-week adventures in the interior. They've handled much of my travel across the country.

Good Wi-Fi, but as with all Guyanese internet connections, expect dropouts and slow speeds.

I personally prefer sister-property Cara Lodge, about two blocks away, but would stay here again in a pinch.

“Colonial Conveniece and Comfort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2007

I selected the Cara Suites, Georgetown, Guyana, based solely on TripAdvisor recommendations. It was my last stop on a 17 nation two-week, solo-traveler, non-stop “island hopping” trip. I found the hotel to be a delightful British Colonial era style property with a moderate-sized restaurant serving extremely good food and wine. Wait staff were impeccable with service for the two dinners that I had there. The sleeping room was large with a couch, sitting area and television (limited channels but I was there to see Guyana not FoxNews!) It was clean and cheerful. The bed was very comfortable. The a/c kept the room cool without any issues. The outside area around the hotel was clean and the buildings were maintained quite well. There is a walking promenade approx one mile long which starts at the front corner and passes a very well maintained gardens area. Cara Suites is situated in a very beautiful, safe setting. The only negative is the lack of an elevator. Porter service for my luggage was available to me on my arrival. While standing near the hotel, taking a sunset picture of a very large house directly across the street from the hotel, a couple stopped to ask me why I was taking the image of the house. I advised them, “Because it is so beautiful.” We talked and I ultimately joined them on the balcony of their “beautiful house”, overlooking the promenade and gardens, to share drinks and snacks and stories about their families’ heritage. I will return to Guyana and will stay in the Cara Suites!

“Comfortable stay in Georgetown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2006

I was at the Cara Suites for 10 days in February 2006 and had a very comfortable stay. Guyanese hotels are generally not up to international standards in terms of service or amenities, so Cara Suites came as a pleasant surprise in that it provided most of the amenities of an international hotel including cable TV, minibar, free newspaper delivery, laundry, high-speed internet and a high standard of service. I stayed in two levels of rooms: at first I was in a standard room which had air-conditioning and a "minibar" (a very well-stocked full size refrigerator), but no cooking facilities (see photos of the standard room). Later I upgraded to a two bedroom suite with a kitchenette, which was very roomy and fully equipped for cooking. The beds are full sized and firm and comfortable. The air conditioning works well and the rooms are clean and bright. High-speed internet connections are provided free of charge in all rooms. There are coffee and tea making facilities and irons and ironing boards in all rooms. A large bottled water is provided free of charge and there are more in the minibar. There is a common room with a computer with internet connection and a small library of books and magazines on the second floor. A standard room is $100 US per night and a two bedroom suite is $135 US for single occupancy or $155 for multiple occupancy. The two bedroom suite would be appropriate for a family of 4. The onsite restaurant and bar provide good food at reasonable prices ($7 US for a very big breakfast and around $10 for dinner). Room service is also available. It is a short walk to downtown shopping and restaurants or the 24-hour doorman can call you a taxi. Local calls are free and the newspapers are delivered to your door each morning. The minbar prices are extremely reasonable (beers around $1.50, for example). The service was great, and extremely efficient by Guyanese standards. There is no elevator, so if you cannot handle the stairs ask for a room on the first floor, which is only up one flight of stairs. The only gripe I had was the loud music that could be heard on Saturday night from a nearby night club. It went on until around 1:00 AM. All in all, I would highly recommend Cara Suites for a stay in Georgetown.
