“The good ,the bad and the ugly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Just finished a five night stay and can report
The good.. Restaurant 's food outstanding, good tv in room, good location, good security
The bad... Wifi signal could not reach my room. Staff , with a few exceptions indifferent. Seemed clear they would rather be anywhere else but work. Opposite of staff at Asian hotels
The ugly... Impossible to sleep due to a plofiration of barking dogs at night. Last nite it went on from 11 pm to 1:30 am
Dogs surround the hotel neighborhood. When I complained apparently the owner of yelping dogs is an old lady and there is nothing they can do. The police apparently were even involved
And nothing .
Reason to avoid

“Excellent Guyanese colonial boutique hotel”

A boutique hotel with both excellent service and meals. Older building, but good rooms, with quiet inner courtyard. Professional and friendly staff.

“With a colonial feel this is a good choice if passing through Georgetown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

The lodge is based on a colonial property with attractive whitewashed balconies. We spent three nights here on our travels through Guyana, and it appears to be one of the better options in a relatively unattractive town.
Rooms are sizeable, clean and comfortable, the food is good, the beer is cold and the staff helpful - but don't expect lifts to get your luggage up to the top floor!
We left before dawn every day and the staff always cheerfully arranged an in-room breakfast. You could probably do much worse elsewhere in town!

“Basic comfort, little expensive...”

Probably still the bet choice in Georgetown. Clean rooms with basic comfort. Nothing special, a little expensive. Service is Guyana style, with a smile.

“The Wary Traveller”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

I love Guyana, but their hotels have always been a disappointment. Continuing in this tradition (the title name is not a typo) was the Cara Lodge - my choice after going through the reviews on this very site. I just couldn't go back to the Pegasus (ranked #5) after my last stay there (noisy AC, terrible bathroom) so decided to do some research.

Herdmanston rated #1 didn't have any rooms, so went to #2 - El Dorado Inn. Couldn't reserve online so moved along to #3 - Cara Lodge. Reserving a room was very easy, so booking made and hoped for the best... (As a side note, El Dorado is very close and looks very ordinary and run down from the outside.

The room I got at Cara Lodge, for the price I was paying (US$145 with taxes) was a huge disappointment. Small room; every sound from footsteps to voices can be heard as if it was open space. Closet doors can't close and by the wear on the board floor it has been like this for years. Safe was unworkable and the front desk keep telling me to try and remember the code. Eh? No hot water in the face basin so shaving was a pain. Not very much of a 'how water' in the shower either, but you'll live.

The day person at the fron desk did not have the friendliest demeanour, so don't even try to ask her a question. After the looping conversation with the night guy about the safe, I go into my Zen-like state accepting that I'm not living here forever, but just two nights and back out again.

Will I stay at Cara's again? Uh, no. Will I go back to Pegasus? Probably, but I'll try Herdmanston seeing that I now have a contact in Georgetown who knows the owner. So sad. I could probably spend more time in Guyana, but finding a decent place to stay has always been a challenge.

Last note I had to make is really a question. Who does these reviews and come up with Cara Lodge being a great place to stay? Can't be objective business travellers like me. Has to be a different demographic that thinks its 'quaint and charming'...
