“Like staying at an annoying relative's house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2010

I had only an overnight stay here and the husband & wife owners went quickly from 'getting on my nerves' to 'totally exasperating'.

Thin walls, paper-thin doors, noisy hard flooring. There is no warm water at the sink, it was not even plumbed for warm hot water pipes. Not many places to set your things. No in-room security box.

It was very clean and freshly painted, and in a nice residential neighborhood. And its close to the gay bars, cafes, saunas, etc. There was a very helpful and friendly night manager, and he speaks excellent English. (The owners do not speak any English.)

But the Zona Rosa is also very close: Everything along the northeast part of Bogota is a j short cheap ride by taxi.

There are plenty of nice hotels to choose from, and its worth a few extra dollars to avoid the High Park.

“A nice hotel unless you're single and planning a little "fun"!”

Very nice hotel! Clean, friendly, great home cooked breakfasts! Location, so-so. The shock came when I checked out. My bill had $35 times 3 "additional" added in for 3 "visitors" to my room. Two of which were VERY, VERY brief! This is mentioned VERY vaguely in a waiver they have you sign - Definitely NO specific $$ amount listed! I really feel cheated. If this isn't an issue for you, stay there! You'll enjoy it! I'll try a different hotel next time.

“Avoid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2010

I am 37 yrs old. this was my first and last time. the owners are a retiree couple - husband and wife. they are quite pleasant but inexperienced hoteliers. they have a hands on approach so its not as private as one would like. during my stay - i stayed in two rooms. all windows are of single glazing and all rooms face on to a very busy street and there is a lot of noise from 5.30am. there is one computer offering internet - but it feels awkward as its usually in use by one of the owners. i wanted to explore bogota, and the gay life, before heading to the amazon. they give you a gay guide but its difficult enough to work out wheres hot and wheres not. there are two night staff who are gay. one is friendly, the other is not. they are not really in touch with whats happening on the gay circuit - i went to a great club on a wednesday night in the north of the city - goodlooking gay bogotans with some money, away from the hustle that goes on in the bars (note - i like it rough as much as the next lad, but frankly it can be dangerous in and around some of the bars in chapineiro).

In the end the hoteliers let someone (a new companion whom I had parted company, returned to the hotel asking to be allowed in 'to get my camera' - i was purported to be waiting in a nearby park, of course i was out sightseeing and knew noting of this..) into my room and cash and valuables were stolen. there was no safe deposit box in this room. they offered some discount on my hotel stay but that is not good enough. they also blamed me for my poor character judgement - i felt this was inappropriate, as i had taken adequate care around my new companion, and assumed that things would be safe in my room.

There is no insurance payback for this type of event - so i have learned, to my disappointment. i have written off my loss, but this sort of thing has never happened to me in ireland or the US, or anywhere. i accept i was foolish to carry so much cash - but its a cash society in colombia and it was to be used to pay for amazon trip and hotel expenses in the coming days. I have learned a lesson. my recommendation is you stay in the north of the city in a decent hotel. its only a couple of dollars by cab to the gay area, and you will really only want to be there at night for a beer or two. also there is nothing of interest in the gay area apart from bars and street stalls/limited shopping during the day. avoid LaOficina bar where the very unpretty street urchins will love you for your money.

As you can see i have taken my time before writing this review rather than reacting out of anger - 2 months have passed since my return. just avoid this place, and take care and enjoy this great country, where you must trust no-one - at least on the gay circuit. i made some great friends otherwise on my trip to the amazon. Colombia is a great place - some of its character reminds me of what ireland used to be like when i was a boy 25 years ago, enjoy.

“Great Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2010

I arrived 6am at the airport and the hotel owner, Luis, was there to pick me up and when we arrived to the hotel at 8am, I was ready to check in. My flight back home was at midnight and again they offered me to use the room until Luis drove me to the airport at 8pm without any charge. Teresa cooked me delicious breakfast every morning. Christian gave me a great tour for small charge. It's not a 5 star hotel, but for the money you pay, it's a great value.

“Very good option for unfussy gay travelers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2009

The High Park hotel is more of a guesthouse than a hotel. My room was comfortable and nicely furnished, and the building had a lot of character. It's not a fancy boutique hotel (nor is it priced like one), but I found it to be a pleasant environment. The only drawbacks of my room were that the bathroom was small and that the windows in the main part of the room didn't open -- a second large pane of glass was installed in order to prevent street noise. (While the hotel is in a quiet residential area, the street in front of it can be busy at times). The climate was cool enough while I was there that the non-opening window wasn't a major problem, and I don't think rooms facing the back would have this issue. The hotel is within easy walking distance many gay bars and clubs, and its position midway between the old colonial district and the more modern shopping areas make it a good base for sightseeing. Luis (one of the owners) was particularly warm and helpful in offering advice despite not speaking much English. The owners employ two young guys, Hector and Christian, both of whom were very friendly, knowledgeable, and fluent in English. Breakfast (typically eggs and arepas -- corn pancakes) was tasty and even served in bed if desired. If you only stay in 5-star hotels or are looking for the cheapest place to stay in Bogota, this place isn't for you. But it is a good mid-range option, particularly for people interested in exploring Bogota's gay scene.
