I am 37 yrs old. this was my first and last time. the owners are a retiree couple - husband and wife. they are quite pleasant but inexperienced hoteliers. they have a hands on approach so its not as private as one would like. during my stay - i stayed in two rooms. all windows are of single glazing and all rooms face on to a very busy street and there is a lot of noise from 5.30am. there is one computer offering internet - but it feels awkward as its usually in use by one of the owners. i wanted to explore bogota, and the gay life, before heading to the amazon. they give you a gay guide but its difficult enough to work out wheres hot and wheres not. there are two night staff who are gay. one is friendly, the other is not. they are not really in touch with whats happening on the gay circuit - i went to a great club on a wednesday night in the north of the city - goodlooking gay bogotans with some money, away from the hustle that goes on in the bars (note - i like it rough as much as the next lad, but frankly it can be dangerous in and around some of the bars in chapineiro).
In the end the hoteliers let someone (a new companion whom I had parted company, returned to the hotel asking to be allowed in 'to get my camera' - i was purported to be waiting in a nearby park, of course i was out sightseeing and knew noting of this..) into my room and cash and valuables were stolen. there was no safe deposit box in this room. they offered some discount on my hotel stay but that is not good enough. they also blamed me for my poor character judgement - i felt this was inappropriate, as i had taken adequate care around my new companion, and assumed that things would be safe in my room.
There is no insurance payback for this type of event - so i have learned, to my disappointment. i have written off my loss, but this sort of thing has never happened to me in ireland or the US, or anywhere. i accept i was foolish to carry so much cash - but its a cash society in colombia and it was to be used to pay for amazon trip and hotel expenses in the coming days. I have learned a lesson. my recommendation is you stay in the north of the city in a decent hotel. its only a couple of dollars by cab to the gay area, and you will really only want to be there at night for a beer or two. also there is nothing of interest in the gay area apart from bars and street stalls/limited shopping during the day. avoid LaOficina bar where the very unpretty street urchins will love you for your money.
As you can see i have taken my time before writing this review rather than reacting out of anger - 2 months have passed since my return. just avoid this place, and take care and enjoy this great country, where you must trust no-one - at least on the gay circuit. i made some great friends otherwise on my trip to the amazon. Colombia is a great place - some of its character reminds me of what ireland used to be like when i was a boy 25 years ago, enjoy.
