We spent three nights in Punta del Este in ealry January. Our first hotel was terrible, so we decided to switch the next day and checked out many hotels in town (town is very walkable). We saw rooms in 6-8 hotels listed in the Lonely Planet and Fodors guide in the mid-range categories, and Hotel Peninsula seemed to us to the best deal - $80 for a double room, including breakfast (which was standard). The hotel is well-located on Av Gorlero, though new travelers should be aware this is the really touristy, more crowded part of Punta del Este proper. (If we had it to do all over again, we would stay outside of town, at a nicer place along the beach, perhaps towards La Barra). There is a small pool in the hotel. There is free internet, although there is only one machine so there is often a wait.
The room was in decent shape (no frills) and had A/C (though it was loud) and cable. The bathroom was especially clean and recently rennovated, though it did have a strange, faint odor and the shower was very small.
