“The best backpackers and the worst hotel I've ever stayed in.”

This hotel is all about location and not much else. The staff isn't even that helpful nor friendly and make no effort whatsoever to communicate in English. On our first night there we realized that the blinds in our bathroom which faced the street and the hotel and restaurant across the road were completely see through at night! I approached the front desk about this and they just shrugged their shoulders and said 'oh well, it's the mediteranean style'. I had to insist that they do something about it and two days later they stapled pieces of paper to the blinds. Our room was the size of a shoe box and the zircon dripped water onto our faces while we were asleep. We were there with friends for a week and had breakfast every day and every day had to order each part of the set breakfast because if we didn't, they simply would not bring it. They also charged us 1000 pesos for washing that would have cost us 200 at the local laundromat. There is no room service nor do any of the rooms have bar fridges. Things that I would consider standard issue in hotels but not in back packers.
The owner of the hotel was there at the same time and seemed to use it as his own little party place with clearly no interest in the comfort of the guests or the smooth running of it. The Internet connection was about the same speed as it was when they first invented it.
That was all the bad stuff. Now for the good point: the location is great!

“Charming little hotel right on the beach, great views, very friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2009

We lucked out getting a room at this hotel the day before travelling to Punta del Este on the busiest week of the year. We ended up in a two bathroom, three room suite with a private deck looking out over the (very crowded) beach - which is a surfers paradise. The room was $700 a night, which is bit over top for what it is, but as this is high season and there were vitually no rooms anywhere else, we weren't complaining. The staff are great. The food is good. The town of Barra, just a few km's north of Punta is a nice sleepy alternative to the high rises and swanky homes of Punta del Este. There are lots of great restaurants in town. Jose Ignacio is a lovely little place to visit with a much quieter beach.

“Just Perfect....”

Loved this place, while I had a little trouble making the booking, probably due to my poor Spanish – I finally made it here (and short stint at other ghastly place). And what a nice surprise, they upgraded my room automatically – so had this gorgeous suite with a whole 6 windows looking out over the sea. The bed was a dream to sleep in – soft pillows, high quality cotton – the sound of the sea in the background. And while the restaurant wasn’t open off season, plenty of other good spots near by that are. And the breakfast while simple was super fresh toasted bread with melt in your mouth home made jams. Service super helpful, friendly and nice, and even was allowed a late check-out as the room wasn’t booked for someone else. I would have liked to stay here forever….

“very good with a few minor glitches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2009

a friend and i reserved a sea view room about a month in advance. a few days prior to check-in i received an email saying that the room they had booked for us was having electrical problems and that we could have a similar room with a garden view. this wasn't a big deal to me, but it does make you wonder when reading another review on this site.

i agree with what most other reviewers have said about location, service, and amenities. here are a few more details and areas for improvement:
-- restaurant soundtrack is good, but it continuously loops about the same 20 songs. the staff must be going out of their minds from hearing the same songs. I'm listening to Tom Jones' "Sex Bomb" for at least the third time in only 2 days.
--we stayed in room 7 and they told us that there is only one key so the room wasn't cleaned when we took our key out instead of dropping it at the front desk. i wonder what happens if the key is lost. most hotels have spare keys. (to the hotel's credit the room was cleaned later that night when we did drop off our key).
--the hotel has WIFI, but the signal is weak in the rooms. you really need to bring your laptop down to the lobby or the tables outside the restaurant. suggest getting a new router to boost the signal.
--it was very unclear what was included in the breakfast. there is no menu and the waitress implied like it included a fruit salad and an omelette. we ordered these the first day and didn't get a bill. we got a bill for $25 (two people) the second day. i would suggest that the hotel invest in a breakfast menu.
--taxis into PDE after 10pm cost about 450 pesos or $22 one way. there is a taxi stand close to the hotel, but finding taxis in PDE is a challenge.
--if renting a car, make sure to have your lights on at all times. we got pulled over, but fortunately didn't get a ticket.
--when flying pluna, be prepared for departure tax and $20 per checked bags.
--uruguay prices seem to have dramatically increased in the last year. my time out guide said mains at a seafood restaurant were between $5-9 when in reality they were more like $20 to $50.
--finally, if you are going to punta to party, better go in january. mostly couples and families in feb, but still a lot of stuff is open.

“Beware....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2009

As other user have said, this hotel is very-well situated on the beach and within walking distance to restaurants/shops/bars, and has a great restaurant within it with a kind and friendly waitstaff. However, my stay was majorly dissapointing. My party of 4 reserved the largest room, a suite 007 for three nights. It took me many weeks for Le Club to answer my emails to set up this reservation, which should have been my first sign to stay away, but the place got good reviews so I kept the reservation. Because they seemed a bit disorganized, I was sure to confirm several times via email and then phone a day before to make sure the room and dates were correct. When we arrived at the hotel to check in we were told that our room would be ready at 4pm and so we enjoyed lunch at the restaurant until then. We were then lead to two very small rooms that were in the middle of the restaurant that were not what I had booked. Upon asking the woman why I was being lead to these rooms when I had booked one large suite, she at first acted as if she did not know what I was talking about. When I said it in spanish, she then called over another peron working at the hotel who said that there was someone staying in the other room and we could move there tomorrow but not today. There was no apology. With no other option for rooms, we took what was offered to us. I live in a tiny apt in NY and when I go on vacation I purposefully reserve rooms that are larger so staying in a very small room with an incredibly small bathroom was not what I was invisioning for my vacation. But I was more upset with the fact that I had not been told there was a problem with my reservation until that very moment-there were many opportunities to let us know. The next day we checked to see when we could move to the room and were told that the man in the room refused to leave and had locked himself in, which was a total lie. We ended up talking to the man who was staying in the room we had booked and he told us that when he arrived they showed him the room and told him it was open for him to stay for the duration of his stay which was two weeks. So this leads me to believe that the hotel just wanted to fill that room for longer (the most expensive room in the place) to make more money and decided to just change our reservation without informing us. That is not any way to run a hotel. And I also witnessed another group of people being switched to a different room when they were checking in so this was not something that only happened to us apparently. It needs to be noted that an apology was never uttered from anybody at le club-neither in spanish or english-which to me is completely unacceptible and downright rude. Nor did they take responsibilty for what was ultimately their deliberate screwup. They just kept blaming it on the man in the room. And nobody kept us informed of the sitation, we had to keep checking up ourselves and getting no real answers. After the second morning it was clear we were not getting the room so we just decided to drop it and enjoy our time there but I was not happy with the way anything was handled. There was a man and a woman around all the time who I believe were the owners, however, they never got involved and trying to find out who was in charge of the hotel was impossible. While they did charge us a very fair rate for the two rooms they downgraded us to, I did not feel that makes up for what they did or takes the place of an apology. I think the owners of this place need to get it together, show more courtesy to their guests, and honor reservations that they confirm no matter what. Who needs to deal with that kind of nonsense on vacation? I certainly don't and I won't be going back.
