Not a whole lot of frills here, but you're steps away from shops, restaurants, a beach and surfspot; so what do you need? Pretty friendly staff, didn't really challenge them with anything but they seemed nice enough. Love the location.

The hotel is in La Barra. Only 10ks or so from Punta but in a different world. La Posta is low rise, with interesting architecture and a few yards from the sea.
We'd just hit low season when the room cost $120. In high season it's US$360.
Sea views, friendly staff, good food - when the restaurant was open.
But above all a base to visit Punta del Diablo a couple of hours up the coast. Worth a visit for its beachside huts and amazing laid back, one-man restaurant The old man and the Sea.

Really wanted to like this hotel, b/c it is a great location and has good 'bones' but needs some updating...others have hit the highlights...great location...view of the beach...nice pool...great chocolate croissants for breakfast...front desk staff was very helpful...it is a beach hotel and so had a musty smell which is not uncommon, but it also seemed like there was mold and we both had breathing issues while we stayed here. I think that the restuarant is still meant to be one of the best around...and there were some nice touches...like big chocolate easter eggs for all the guests and a personal happy easter from the owner...interesting people from all over also staying at the hotel...we were there during 'holy week' so all of Punta del Este was pretty bustling.

I stayed at La Posta for 4 days in March 2007. This is a curious hotel. Its major attribute is its location overlooking the beach and ocean, ideal for leisurely walks or watching the surfers. The restaurant is very good and the staff easy going and friendly. Internet access is possible. However, while the hotel may have been a luxurious spot in the past, this is no longer the case. It's trying hard to cling onto its 4 star status. The rooms appear a bit dated and the bathroom and fixtures somewhat basic. We paid US$120 per night for an ocean view room, which was OK, but the price in high season reaches US$300, which seems excessive.
