This was my first stay at any Sheraton, anywhere - usually my company books the 'W' or Four Seasons in Doha and I was looking forward to seeing how the competition fared. In summary, I would think that this hotel was the best in town 30 years ago but it is struggling to compete now.
Good points:
1. Excellent location.
2. Layout - very novel, like staying inside a wedding cake.
3. Nice breakfast.
4. Prompt cab service.
Bad points - quite a few of these, unfortunately - up to the reader's discretion to ascertain whether I was just unlucky on this one occasion:
1. Check in (at about midnight) was rushed and not particularly comprehensive (not pointing out where breakfast was or asking me if I wanted a newspaper) and the desk staff seemed stretched and just keen to get onto the next customer. Understandable, but pales in contrast to what you receive in other hotels. Having a separate check in for frequent users ('Preferred Guests') clearly makes things difficult for the staff as I often saw non-frequent guest arrive before (and therefore wait longer) than frequent users who get to queue in a different place.
2. Having gone up three floors, my room key did not work. After my phone call down to reception, it took 20 minutes for a replacement key to be brought up to me, which was not welcome given how late it was.
3. I was put in a smoking room, which stank, despite my booking asking for a non-smoking room. This was corrected, but it took an hour to transport my three bags to a non-smoking room.
4. Amazingly, there is no wireless internet connection and there is a chunky charge for using the wired connection in the rooms. Miles off-market for Doha and seems really quite cheap in this day and age.
5. I got a 6am 'alarm call' that I didn't ask for - clearly not welcomed given how late the above meant that I got to bed.
This hotel is perfectly fine for short stays but I suppose the point is that this place is pricing itself alongside all of the other five stars in Doha and (I say this with no axe to grind) it is notably behind in terms of facilities and service.
I'd only stay again when at least three other places in town are full.

Dear BartyCrouch,
Thank you for your constructive comments regarding your recent stay at the Sheraton Doha.
Your comments are taken very seriously and we have already begun to take action (we have been planning!)! The hotel is indeed celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is embarking on some major renovations for the next two years. This year as an example our Al Shaheen Restaurant on the top of the hotel and the pool and lagoon area will be completely renovated.
We were certainly not pleased and are sorry you found our check-in process difficult and had problems with your room key, wakeup call and luggage delivery. It is certainly not indicative of the fine quality of service we try to maintain on a regular basis. We have recently begun a separate check-in for Starwood Preferred Guest Members (SPG) and have also taken steps to realign our checkin process.
Thank you again for your constructive comments and we do hope to see you upon your return to Doha! We would appreciate upon your return to call my office directly so I can personally handle your reservations.
Sincerely,
Steven Kalczynski
