“need renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

I stayed at this hotel for 3 night. The staff are excellent. The room was very small with old furniture, an old TV set.The room is dark so is the hallways They advertise themselves are Five star but in fact they are more 2+ after all Mercure in Europe is 4 star. The Restaurant is in a pathetic situation. The menu needs to change completely. I have stayed at Mercure in Europe and elsewhere, they are more pleasant than this run down hotel.

“One of my worst hotel experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 May 2010

No on in this place knows what they are doing. You can trust no one, simply no one.
My first night was booked through tripadvisor based on the reviews of some of the other travellers. Although I had plans of staying in Makkah for 3 days but decided to just book for one night in this hotel and extend my stay if the place was up to the mark.

The seond day the front desk gave me a good rate if I extended my stay instead of moving to a hotel much closer to Kaba. I agreed. However at the time of checking out, I found out that no one was willing to agree on the rate they had offered earlier just becaue it was not in their system. Eventually I ended up being cheated during my Umrah and overpaid for the stupid hotel. The rooms were very dirty and you could smell the old carpet smell for miles.

The service was simply pathetic. One of the housekeeping guy opened my room with his master key and came right in while I was taking a nap. After I started shouting he said he was just checking if I had checked out or not.

Althogh they say this place is 800 meters from Kaba but it will take forever with the road crossings and the constuciton work going on. This place is not recommended for anyone who plans to go to Madina specially for Umrah.

“Good for the Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2009

I stayed here after my whole family and I got turned away from the Saudi check in desk. So we had an unplanned extra week. Since I hadn't budgeted for an extra week I had to find somewhere quick and cheap. Was really surprised with this, given the cost of Al Massa hotel and its shabbyness and poor quality of service etc. The rooms (we had 4) we good standard. Not very large, so you don't get the additional sofa bed like many others, unless you go for a larger executive room. But it was a good enough size.

The hotel offers a shuttle bus frequently between prayer times. On the way back finding the bus can be a headache, but that's because of the general chaos there. But the driver doesnt wait around. The shuttle stops a little while after Isha, and resumes an hour or so before fajr. We arrived, deciding to do another umrah at about 02.30 and they got the bus out for us especially to take us to Haram, which was a pleasant difference in service to Al Massa (where they just didnt give a care)

On the way back, we sometimes took a taxi. Many drivers don't know the hotel, but if you tell them the area, you'll easily navigate him to it yourself. And at about 10SAR its quite good.

Not many places to buy food nearby the hotel, so we used to buy after Maghrib (to avoid the rush after Isha), stick around for Isha prayer and then take the food with us on the shuttle bus (or cab) Although there is an Al baik nearby if you fancy that and small shop run by a local where you can get milk, bread cereals etc which you'll need since the breakfast is absolutely appalling. Stale food, with little or no variety whatsoever. Not worth getting out of bed for at all. So stock up.

All said, given that I paid about GBP£35 for each room per night it was worth the money. As far as the breakfast (again) I realised it is not such an important requirement for a hotel. We stayed at the Hilton Medina before Mecca. The breakfast there was EXACTLY the same every day. How many times can you have croissants in a week. So if you can be flexible (and you have to be) this hotel is not such a bad choice and for the price its great. The price allowed us to put our kids in separate rooms rather than the way we were in Hilton Medina cramped and paying in excess of GBP£100 per night.

“Excellent for time of year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2009

Stayed 3 nights in Ramadhan in which this was by far the cheapest hotel available for the class. the hotel claims it is 5 stars but I would say it is a comfortable 4 star hotel; maybe 5 star for Saudi standard but not really international standard. Paid about $100 a night for a twin room while other hotels were priced at $500+ a night.

Pros:
Arrived to the hotel at 5pm and the room was ready. The reception was very welcoming and I even received 2 phone calls during our stay to check that everything was alright. The room itself was adequate, with an empty fridge for you to store drinks you buy from outside. There was no menu in the hotel but whatever we wanted, we got, and at very reasonable prices. Spaghetti bolognaise was $6, fresh orange juice was $3, large bottle of water $2 or a taboulah/salad was $3.

Cons: Location, location, location. The hotel is about a 15-20min walk from the haram but it's a hilly road and very very busy. A taxi from the hotel to the haram or vice versa costs 15-20SAR($4-$5) for the 5min trip; get used to it, taxi drivers in Saudi are not the most honest; no meters! The bus that leaves from the hotel to the Haram leaves every 30mins, however it actually leaves as soon as someone enters it. The return journey is the problem; you can either wait up to 30mins in the heat for the bus, or catch a taxi, which you will do more often. Another thing is the TV, if you get bored and want to watch tv, you have a choice of Saudi channels, Arabic news channels, or CNN; again, not really a problem since you are there for a different reason. Finally, the shower as can be seen from the picture is quite small and only the shower curtains prevents water from leaking out, which will happen.

Overall, not a 5* hotel, but an excellent 5* service, food and price for the time of year. Would recommend again.
