Located near the Sheraton Hotel in Tel Aviv, it is still within walking distance of Jaffa and other local sites. The walk along the esplanade was much more pleasant than walking even one block inland, due to the cooling breeze. The beach is sort of across the street. The hotel itself is the basic tourist class hotel, with a commensurate price, and therefore much more reasonable than the other international hotels nearby.
The room is comfortable enough for two and the bathroom accommodates two people at the same time. The shower provided a good stream of hot water to clean off the sweat from the humidity ! The tile on the walls and floor were a bit moldy. Although we didn’t drink the water from the tap, we did use it for brushing our teeth with no ill effects.
We had a room with a queen size bed, desk and a couple of chairs; the furniture is made of laminate, but didn’t look too abused. A couple of the walls had very bizarre cracks and the carpet really needs a good vacuuming with the furniture moved around first. I wouldn’t say that the room was filthy, just needs a good cleaning.
There are an adequate number of electrical outlets; wireless internet access is free, but it is only available in the lobby. The small TV was adequate.
The only real complaint was the air conditioner; we had to leave it on all night and day, and yet it didn’t seem to de-humidify the air. We did a little bit of washing and it took a couple of days to dry.
There is no mini-refrigerator in the room; since we were carrying something that needed refrigeration, the staff was kind enough to put it into their bar refrigerator for us.
Breakfast was more than adequate, with hardboiled eggs, cheeses, a variety of vegetables, toast, cereal and coffee and tea. Mostly, it was that the food looked and tasted fresh.
If you are looking for a tourist class hotel at a reasonable price, and are not too particular about cleanliness, then the Olympia should be fine.
PS after we returned to Tel Aviv from our week long tour of Israel, we stayed another night at the Olympia. We were upgraded to a sea view room on the 1st floor, with internet access in the room. The room was in better condition than the first one we had. This room did have a small refrigerator. Clearly, an upgrade from the first time we stayed !
btw, you can take the train to the central station and take the #10 bus; it's not far from the stop.
