“Group tour in Istanbul”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

First of all let me say that I didn't choose the hotel. It was chosen from our travel agent on our group tour to Istanbul.
Before getting to Turkey I sat down and read all the reviews that were written here. Judging from the reviews I would to have to deal with rude staff, things missing from my safe, no TV, no heat, no decent breakfast and so on. See I couldn't change the hotel, only my tour guide could, so I was prepared for the worst.
First of all let me say that my stay at the Gran Star was overall a very pleasant and comfortable one. The room gave you a sense of warmth and coziness. The beds were very comfortable. The room and the bathroom were clean. We had a fridge, a lcd television with satellite receiver, hair dryer and a safe. The staff was very polite and willing to help. At least the people we interacted with. They didn't understand English well but if they didn't understand something they always tried to find someone who understood and did their best to help. After all in Istanbul English is not a common language. The staff's knowledge of English was on par with most of the shops or restaurants we went. Not much but not zero either. We used the safe and there never were any items or money missing from it. Even my personal items hold the same exact place where I left them on the table or chairs. About the TV, there is a tv set in the room which has only one Turkish channel but there is also a digital satellite receiver which is connected to the tv and has more than 200 free channels( English speaking channels like bbc and cnn included). It’s obvious that it isn’t the hotels fault if someone uses only the TV and not the satellite receiver underneath it. The breakfast was nice and and with a fair number of choices. The food was fresh and very tasty.
Of course there were a few quirks, but nothing serious. Would I stay there again? Of course I would.

“Very horrible service! NOt recommended at all!”

Receptionist are terrible, so rude, never care about their guests, u approach the reception counter, the never look at you, maybe 3 staff behind the counter just having a conversation, so you have to wIt for them until they finish, and when u ask about something, they are not helpful at all. I called from the room asking to book a tour in the boat, the staff answered in rude way that it is closed, so then I called the company tour by myself and find out that t is open! Again I called to come and fix my terrible Internet in the room, and the receptionist answer was: ' you come down and bring your laptop' ! what kind of service is this? Then I asked the receptionist please if anyone ask about me just say that I am not staying in this hotel, so what happened after is that someone came to ask about me at 3 am and they called my room to wake up me at this time even I didn't answer the phone! Another thing, I came to the reception to ask about the time that I should leave if my plane is at 8 pm! And the answer was u should pay full day, oh gosh! I wasn't talking about money, then the receptionist called a guy and the guy came as he is a big thing and said I am the captain of this hotel! I dnt care what ever u are, just give me a good service! The only thing acceptable in this hotel is the food and beverage staff, they are so nice and helpful, and they even ask if my stay is good in this hotel! Which was unfortunately NOT and I will never recommend this place to anyone! I had 4 terrible nights in this hotel!

Room Tip: Never stay in this hotel because of the receptionist staff attitude! They never smile, they never he...

“Quiet rooms, caring staff staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Hotel Grand Star ıs one of the best hotels I have ever stayed ın. The front desstaff ıs very effıcıent yet frıendly especıally Emre. Ender, the concıerge ıs eager to help and Turgut Kaya, who seems omnıpresent, ıs knowledgeable and very competent. He even walked wıth me to the Metro Bus offıce to help me get a tıcket to Amasra. Servıce beyond the call of duty. The rooms are extremely clean and the housekeepıng staff go out of theır way to get blankets, towels, whatever I needed to be comfortable. Its also one of quıetest hotels I have ever stayed ın. There ıs no plumbıng or room-to-room noıse transference. My room was next to an elevator but I never heard ıt. I loved the ınterıor desıgn of the rooms and even took a photo of the shower because ıf I ever buıld a house I want my shower to look lıke thıs one. The lıghtıng ıs subtle yet effıcıent and the bed was extremely comfortable. A sweet surprıse was goıng downstaırs for breakfast to dıscover that the breakfast room looked eastward over the Bosphorus. I could watch the sun rıse and see seagulls and ocean-goıng shıps as I ate delıcıous Turkısh pastrıes and cheeses or had fresh yogurt wıth mueslı. Its locatıon, mınutes from Taksım Square and Istıklal Avenue, ıs a huge plus. When I vısıted Istanbul before, I stayed ın Sultanhamet, whıch ıs much more tourısty. At the Grand Star, I felt I could walk out the door and be ın the real Istanbul. I found a great barber shop, a fabulous hole-ın-the-wall doner restaurant, and a wonderful bookstore all wıthın fıve mınutes walk. A professıonally run, well desıgned hotel ın a great locatıon!

Three small complaınts. The worst was the cost of the laundry servıce. A modest amount of laundry (2 shırts, 4 T-shırts, 2 underwear, 1 paır socks) cost more than one-nıghts stay. Dısgustıng. If nothıng else, very poor publıc relatıons for an otherwıse great hotel. The choıce of TV channels ıs very poor. Most are pay channels (though one, Hot Arab Sex, whıch I dıd not vıew, was free. Inexplıcable.) The staff names on theır nametags are too small to read. It ıs an excellent staff, and I would lıke to have mentıoned more by name.

“Terrible service, except from the bar tender. Rooms cleanliness disgusting. No one speaks English”

Spent a weekend in the hotel with my girlfriend. First impression was ok, and the location is great, a 1 min walk from the bustling taksim street. The room was quite, and seemed to be clean until we looked what was under the bed! It seemed for past month they have sweeping all the dirt rite under the bed. I saw dirty Kleenex rolled up, a layer of dust and what seemed to be empty nut cases. Tv channels extremely confusing and breakfast was just horrid, we had to leave the hotel to have decent BF. When calling reception, no one spoke English, they kept referring us to some else until they found someone in the hotel who spoke the very basic of English. The only person that was welcoming and who actualy very nice with us and who spoke the best English was the bartender. If anything, he was the only person that was doing something right. When checking out, we had to call our driver to pick us from hotel, asked the reception to make a 30 second call, she seemed very angy and charged us for the call. I got on the taxi and told myself what a lovely and exciting city and will def be visiting, but DEFENETLY not in that hotel, unless they make the bartender the manager!!
