“100% worth your money”

Birbey Hotel is not at all luxurious or impressive, still it was clean, quiet and warm (when we visitd Istanbul the temperture was very low and it was snowing, but in our room we could sleep naked!) and the personnel was helpful and cheerful, so I believe it was worth the 35 euros per night that we payed for our 1st floor double room. A very simple breakfast buffet was included in this price. It is situated near a tram station, only a few stops from Sultanahmet Place and near a metro station that leads straight to the airport. Next to the hotel you can find little stores that sell almost everything you might need during your stay and take away restaurants that sell the most delicious kebab for 1 euro and stay open after midnight (we always made a stop when returning late)

“Look further than Birbey Hotel - it's a hole!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

The condition of this hotel is worthy only of being condemned. No work has been done on it since it was built and everything is mouldy, mildewing, falling apart and barely functional. The lavatory cistern works but the top fall off when you lift the button. Wall paper is peeling, carpet is moulting and is disintegrating as is everything in the room, creating dust. Cleaning consists only of changing sheets and these are full of a smelly chemical. Only one short sheet covers the mattress which has black mould stains, water and blood stains, lumps and god knows what else. It is disgusting! I had a severe allergic reaction to something in the first room and the second night, the room they moved us to was so small we bruised our legs trying to get past the beds to the table. The TV was a joke in both rooms. No matter how cheap and it wasn't that cheap, as I stayed in far better for the same price in Izmir and Kusadasi, this hotel must be condemned and health authorities alerted.
It's saving grace is the bevy of very handsome, courteous young male staff who are on hand to do anything for you like bring hot water so we can at least make our own cup of tea rather than pay 2 lire for it. Service can't be faulted. They were lovely!
Breakfast is the usual Turkish style and hubby had to bring his own coffee, milk, muesli and orange juice. I didn't mind the olives, chilly fetta, tomatoes, cucumber, black coffee/tea and fresh bread.

“Cheap & Cheerful, hard to find.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

Treated my stay in Istanbul as a bit of an adventure and Hotel Birby fitted the bill perfectley. The hotel is tucked away in a back street and is hard to find, however the local area seemed friendly and we felt safe. I stayed in winter and found the hotel room to be very hot with signs in room not to open window which i ignored. Room was basic but comfotable, reasonabley clean with decent bath room which was also clean if not in need of renovation. No noise from street apart from call to prayer however other guests were and seemed to never sleep. Close to old town for shopping eating and sight seeing. Dont bother getting up early for the breakfast. The Hotel staff were polite and friendly but there was something of Basil Fawlty about the proprietor.
This hotel was good value for money (it was the chepest) and you get what you pay for.

“Basic but acceptable”

11 stops from the terminus of the tram and then 200 yards walk, this hotel is tucked away on a side street in a gritty but not unpleasant part of town, but we never felt unsafe. Staff were pleasant, the room grimy and smelling of cigarette smoke, but the bed perfectly comfortable. Shower was excellent, toilet less so. Breakfast the worst I have ever experienced ,but for 18 euros a night you can hardly complain! Next door was a little corner shop with a wonderful owner for whom nothing was too much trouble.
