I was very happy with the clean and quiet rooms, comfortable beds, friendly service, fine breakfast, and SPECTACULAR views, and of course the incredibly convenient location. I was deterred from booking this hotel online based on a couple of histrionic negative reviews on this page. I checked it out in person once I got to Istanbul and immediately checked out of my brand new hotel where I was paying twice as much for the same amount of space (and the privilege of trying to sleep next to an active railroad track) and grabbed a suite on the third floor of the charming Hotel Park and loved my stay. The negative reviewers here I suspect will find lots to complain about even if they were staying across the street at the Four Seasons (and paying $500/night). No, Hotel Park is not the 5 star Four Seasons, and when you're paying only one fifth the price of the Four Seasons, you will be happy with the solid 3 stars conditions of Hotel Park.
The proprietor, Reza, was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful with whatever we needed. He ran out and got my wife some medicine when she was not feeling well, came through with very good suggestions for restaurants, laundry, and whatever we needed. He made quick arrangements and got me a taxi at discount rates to take me to the airport and back when I was in a rush and could not find a taxi without getting ripped off.
Access to all the major tourist attractions, good places to eat, and shopping could not be easier. One look at the street map of Sultanahmet neighborhood will tell you how confusing the street layouts are, and it's easy to get lost. But, because of Hotel Park's proximity to the sights and central location, we never got lost walking around.
But the hotel's biggest asset, better than 5 stars, is its two level roof deck with breathtaking wrap-around views of Aya Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the Marmara Sea where it meets the Bosphorus. The view is spectacular enough by day--for breakfast. But even more so by night, when the city, and the very nearby historical buildings are lit up, while you relax with a drink in your hand after a day of sightseeing.
I suspect I'll return in a couple of years and find Hotel Park has been bought out by a big company charging three times today's rate and replacing the friendly staff with the military efficiency and perfection the negative reviewers seek. Until then it remains an incredible value. So, by all means: Stay here. i repeat. Stay here!!
