“Still a Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

person found this review helpful

Check in - Reception staff was efficient and had the reservation information on hand

Housekeeping staff - They are also good. The room was clean and equipped with their soap and shampoo. Towels OK. Hot water hot, not just warm.

Room - Nicely appointed with a good goose neck desk lamp (other, more expensive hotels have few lights/lamps and they are dim). Room was on the quiet side of the hotel and on the 2nd floor, which was good;

Internet - Much better than other Tashkent hotels I have stayed in

Restaurant - Much better and less expensive than other Tashkent hotels I have stayed in;

The Other Guests - much more interesting than in other Tashkent hotels I have stayed in.
At the Grand Orzu there is an international, multicultural group representing tourists, NGO's, UN orgs, etc. Not just a bunch of Central or South Asian businessmen.

Room Tip: I consider the suites to be a good value

“Decent affordable hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

The Grand Orzu hotel is perfectly decent, affordable hotel. It is basic, but you get what you pay for.

My wife and I stayed in a large suite at the end of the top floor. No lift to take up our luggage but the stairs were wide and quite shallow. We had asked for a double bed but got two singles - but they were quickly pushed together and remade by the staff.

Reception was usually quite busy - lots of staff but they always seemed to be doing something. There is an internet computer in reception (3000 soum per hour) which was always available when we needed it - but I imagine sometimes there could be a queue.

The food is unspectacular but is served in a pleasant courtyard next to a very small swimming pool. We did see one man doing lengths (three strokes got you across the pool) but there wouldn't have been much room for anyone else to get in at the same time. The tables in the courtyard are a mixture of regular furniture and Uzbek daybeds covered in carpets and cushions.

The location is handy for the airport but is some way from Tashkent's centre. Not that Tashkent has much if a centre to be near.

Hotel staff can arrange tours, guides, etc.

“Need Renivations”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

Used this hotel as a layover between flights and the “service” they have for pickup at the airport to the hotel with taxi is much more expensive then a normal taxi.
The rooms are old and worn down, needs a renovation.
The food in the restaurant is ok.

I would not live here for a couple of nights, but for a couple of hours between flight is ok.

“Comfortable budget hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

Convenient to the Airport, good breakfast, has a swimming pool and good wifi in the rooms. There aren't many restaurants close by except the Caravan and Chelsea Arms. Both are expensive but the Caravan has fantastic live music. Better than a concert.

“A well-run hotel with a charming courtyard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2011

I stayed here twice and found it to be a pleasant surprise for my first hotel upon arrival in Uzbekistan. I was prepared for a much lower standard. Having said that, "standard" is highly variable in Uzbekistan. Each hotel we stayed at had rooms of many different sizes, configurations and window views. The rooms at Grand Orzu are highly variable, such as my first which had a heavy smoker's smell to it and faced an alley. The second room I stayed in was fine though, no smell and a pleasant view of the swimming pool. Yes, swimming pool; small but refreshing. The bathrooms are clean, the showers are hot and refreshing. The breakfast, included in the price, was a mixture of local and foreign preferences. It was fresh and delicious, featuring fruits, vegetables, meats, pancakes, eggs etc.
The staff are friendly and several speak excellent English. It's very easy to get to the airport from here. The location is thus convenient but also on a quiet street.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking room.
