“Excellent for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

The hotel is very centrally located, several rooms have been renovated recently and they are quite comfortable. I was there for 3 nights in the second week of December and hence the weather was very cold, however the central heating was excellent and they keep it on 24 hours even in the room , which is a huge blessing if you are not used to the cold like me.
I got upgraded to a clubsuite and the room was very large and recently renovated, the bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean .
The location is centrally located and the big plus for Indians and especially vegeterians is that there is a Indian restuarant in the hotel with passable veg food.
Howver beaware that the room service may not understand what you mean by vegetarian and anyways the roomservice is quite bad due to the language problem.
the free wifi in the room is huge plus as there are very few other options outside inthe city.
I got room through a travel agent in delhi and we paid an average of 50$ per night , i suggest that you do the same as these agents book block deals and they are able to get great rates
Overall its a good value for money deal ... highly recomended for Business travellers

Room Tip: Ask for the 8th floor or the 4th rooms they have been recently renovated

“Big pluses, many little minuses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

I stayed here for eight nights in November and early December 2011.

Advantages:
* Excellent central location just across a small square from two metro lines and a supermarket
* Outstanding value at $70/night for a single
* Clean comfortable room, mostly quiet at night (see below)
* Free wireless Internet worked about 90 percent of the time in the room, just fast enough for low-res video Skype.
* Friendly and responsive service, albeit with some strange moments (see below)
* Good quality and variety of breakfast offerings, including an Indian curry daily
* Fully equipped exercise room

Weird/negative issues:
* Upon check-in at 6 AM, I was taken to my assigned room. The porter opened the door -- to the great alarm of the poor guy who was in there. I got a new room.
* I had confirmed that my room was supposed to be nonsmoking, but there was an ashtray in there, plus many smokers in neighboring rooms. I feel that the claim that some rooms are nonsmoking is probably a lie.
* My first afternoon, trying to sleep off the exhaustion of long travel, I had the "privacy please" sign up on the door handle, but I kept hearing my door lock beeping. I went to the door and found two staff. "Don't mind us," they said in Russian. "We're just checking the time logger on the lock."
* One elevator was acting strange one day, going to floors not requested by passengers, to the point of being bizarre and a little scary. I told the front desk. "We know. Someone's coming to fix it." But it never occurred to anyone to shut that elevator down.
* One day in the middle of my stay, my key ceased to work. Front desk: "Oh, we had you checking out last night..." I had my key reprogrammed and stayed in that room without incident.
* Lots of south Asian tourists, including a group of pathetic guys for whom patronizing prostitutes was a major purpose of the trip. But I never felt unsafe, and furthermore, prostitution seems to be present at at least a few other hotels in the city.
* On at least one occasion, one of these guys knocked repeatedly on my door at 1 AM mistakenly looking for one of his trip-mates.

Given all this, I am 50-50 about whether I'll stay here again or pay up to twice as much to stay at the Dedeman Silk Road next time.

“An Average Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

The hotel is centrally located with very serene & green surroundings, also known as the Tata Hotel because it was built by the Tata group..The breakfast that was served at the coffee shop was just average with no sugar free available on 1 day.The room service is non existent as when I wanted to order, they informed me that only steak & Greek Salad was available. The coffee shop & the room service are common,so the same items were available in the coffee shop. When ice was required by me in the evening for my drinks,it was sent in the room in a plastic bag(there was no ice bucket) & no whiskey glasses were available. When the rooms were cleaned by the housekeeping, the water glasses were not replaced but cleaned in the room itself and put back.

“Low Average but excellent staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I am rating this hotel as high as low average only because the staff is excellent. I have high standards as I am used to the level of service given in Thailand. Here, whether it was the housekeeping staff, the reception staff, or the restaurant staff, they were all cheerful and attentive and within the limits allowed by their management they did what they could to deal with situations.

Perhaps I am being overly critical, but I do not like hotels with hot, stuffy, un-air conditioned rooms. More on this below.

I was told that the hotel is 50% owned by Tata of India and 50% by an Uzbek business group. They seem to have been able to combine the worst of both business models.

Other reviews recommended staying in a Plus Floor room. I did. The room was OK although ill lit and without air conditioning.

Other reviews indicate that the mattresses are OK. I got a room with a lumpy, soft mattress.

AA. Hotel management follow the old Soviet Model of when air conditioning operates. It is October so it is by definition too cold to operate the air conditioning. This October there was an unseasonal heat wave. Regardless of how uncomfortable the room, management refused to turn on the air conditioning.

I was told by maintenance staff to open my window. This did not appreciably lower the temperature, but it did ensure that I could not sleep well because of the traffic noise. This combined with the poor mattress did not make for a restful sleep.

BB. The restaurant is over priced (USD4.50 for a single espresso), and it has a limited wine selection (and none by the glass).

The breakfast buffet has less variation that I have encountered in hotels classed as 2 star. The exact same thing every morning, most of which seemed to be of poor quality (for example the grilled sausage appeared to be a low cost boiled hot dog.

CC. The room carpeting is maintained to South Asian standards. This means that they are not thoroughly cleaned. The resulting mold causes me to sneeze.

DD. The location is good - many nearby shops and restaurants. Almost everything is available within a 30 minute walk.

EE. Do not ask the hotel to pick you up. They charge USD15 one way.

FF. Would I stay here again? I hate to write never, but I am looking at alternatives.

Room Tip: Check out alternative hotels

“Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

The hotel is well located, it is near a metro stop, the efendi restaurant is about 10-15 minutes walk away. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The room I had was of a very good size and had a good range of amenities: fridge, kettle, flat screen satellite television, settee and chairs. The bathroom was also of a good size and well equipped with a separate shower, unfortunately the water temperature ranged from tepid to cold. As has previous been noted the hotel is a little worn though this applies more to the public areas such as the corridors. The room I had was well maintained; the worn look also provided the place with some character. The Swimming pool was of a good size. The breakfast was fair; a reasonable range of foods available, nice melon, however the breakfasts I had in Uzbekistan were generally poor and the La Grande Plaza provided the best breakfast during my stay in Uzbekistan. The hotel also provides a good cheap laundry service.
