“Bullyboys at this hotel held our friends hostage!”

i am writing this one hour after our friends' terrible, alarming experience at the Colombo City hotel, Fort. Be warned, this hotel is in the Rough Guide. Our French friends viewed a room, agreed to take it, but after 15 mins found the sheets were dirty and cockroaches were in the bathroom. When they tried to leave, five members of staff held them hostage in the lift for nearly an hour, demanding they paid the full price of the room, Rs11,000 ($100). We rang the hotel receptionist, who would not be moved. We called the tourist police and the French embassy who intervened on their behalf and eventually they were allowed to leave having paid Rs1,000.

Hotel is ok, but make sure you don't step foot at the lobby wearing shorts! Every night when we return to the hotel after spending the day out we are harassed about our clothes and shoes.I'm sorry If I have to go through the lobby to go to my room!!!

Room Tip: Stay at the Hilton instead!

Wanted to stay there based on the price listed in both tripadvisor and lonely planet , about 35 usd
Price quoted when we reached is 96 usd!
Wasted trip! However a great location.

Location was great and the greatness stops there. Money was missing from our computer bags, bugs everywhere, beds were like 25 years old, electricity was off often, would only give 1 room key. We found the restaurant was good priced and we enjoyed the food on the roof top at night. But that was all we enjoyed at this location. Don't wreck your vacation or business trip find another location. Trustme...

Very unsafe hotel, from my room all valuable things have been stolen, and no one of the management even agree to listen at me.
