I landed at Colombo airport just after midnight. My travel agent put me into Global Towers as it was "only" a 45 minute drive and I would be leaving on tour early in the morning. I had checked the reviews that indicated this was a mediocre property, but figured that I would arrive about 2 a.m. and leave by 8 a.m. so just needed a decent place to lie down.
Even then, Global Towers didn't meet this very low standard.
At 4 a.m. I was shocked awake by a freight train whistle and the room furniture doing a jitterbug dance across the floor. The train tracks are across the street, but I swore that they passed right outside my room door!
Two more train shakedowns before sunrise, then I gave up and decided to shower and leave. The shower was hot and strong, which was a good thing as it helped flush the clumps of hair left from a previous guest down the drain. There was stained grout all around the shower, and bits of crud stuck on the floor behind the toilet. Zero stars for the cleaning staff.
The hotel was opened in 2004, and it's been ridden hard since then with hardly any maintenance from what I could see. The breakfast area offered up a lukewarm buffet, but I only took coffee after noting that a couple of the buffet cauldrons looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a day or two.
I guess this property will keep getting customers from overseas travel agents--once--or by dropping rates until it finally gets to the budget two star category that it deserves.
Surely there has to be a better mid-range choice than this one.
