“Basic but not bad”

A hotel in the center of Ulaanbaatar, providing average services.

Rooms are dated and offer nothing special. Price/quality ratio is poor but I think this is the case in most of UB hotels.

I've booked a standard single room and I got a twin one. When I asked for a room with a double bed they asked for 50USD more. No thanks! :)

Staff is helpful and efficient. Room service was rather good. Food came quick, was warm and quality was not bad.

If you want to order coffee do not order form the room service but from the coffee shop (extension154 if I remember well). The coffee is much better (at a double price of course) and you can have any kind of coffee. They will bring the coffee in your room but you have to pay in cash.

Will I come back? I believe the next time I'll try another hotel in Ulaanbaatar so I can have something to compare.

Room Tip: Go for dinner at the "Modern Nomad" Restaurant which is just around the corner. Do not mis...

“Great location but a basic and dated business hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

The location is on the main thoroughfare in Ulaan Baatar, right across from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building. There is a park between the hotel and the main road, Peace Avenue.

The building is old with a grand entrance and a broad central staircase that takes you up to all the floors - so you can tell that it is not a tall building. The city has developed rapidly in recent years and this building is in the classic Soviet style.

The room I stayed in looked out the rear of the building and the view was pretty dismal. The room itself was tiny, even for a single person. I am not sure how a couple with suitcases would fit in. The shower was virtually unusable - the temperature of the water would alternate between scalding hot to freezing cold. Not a pleasant experience during the colder months.

The complimentary breakfast is very nice with a wide selection of breakfast choices. There is a café and bottle shop on the ground floor. The hotel also has an Indian and Mongolian restaurant.

“Pre and Post Expedition Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

Stayed here prior to a Gobi desert expedition and also post expedition. Stayed for 4 days in May 2011 and 3 days in July 2011. Hotel is in an excellent location in the city everything is an easy walk. It is a good business focused hotel for Mongolia but it is old and Soviet style but that adds to the charm. Lots that could be improved if you we comparing with western standards of service but hey Mongolia is a developing country so they will get their. Great spot for business meetings and free wifi works well on ground floor. After 51 days in the desert and a night on the train to get back to UB the hotel shower can only be described as paradise!

“Convenient location with a nostalgic touch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

The UB Hotel, as it is generally called, was and still is the hotel for the UB elite to meet, the traditional conference and event location. It still has the look and feel of a Soviet-style higher end hotel but it remains one of the better choices in UB. The location is excellent, several renovations have upped the comfort, especially the addition of air conditioning which can be important during the summer and during warmer spring and fall days when the heating is on but can't be turned down. The service is endearing - they will always try to get things right. The food is tolerable but not very good (the Indian Taj Mahal is the one exception - don't let the strange decor fool you, the food there is excellent). If you pay a bit more you can get a suite which is helpful for longer stays. No WiFi in the rooms but well working broadband.

“manage your expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

First trip to UB for a quick holiday and read previous reviews of hotels being less than desirable in UB so I wasn't expecting much. That was very helpful because this hotel is not a 4 star hotel by european standards. There are many things that could be improved with the physical accommodations however the staff were delightful and tried to be as helpful as possible. Breakfast in the morning was much better than any meals we had elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors seem to be quieter. Rooms are very spacious.
