“DO NOT STAY THERE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2009

Well, reading the other reviews made me realize that i wasnt the only one to have had a bad experience with Tumuujin. i didnt get beaten up as the british guest but i got into a serious argument with him and he was extremely rude, disconsidered and unhelpful. This guy is not truthworthy and staying there may be risky or at least there are high chances that will leave you with an unpleasant experience. Mongolia is amazing but traveling around Mongolia can be quite a challenge so save yourself a headache and do not stay there. The place is great located, but the rooms are not comfortable and well, you now know enough about the owner.

“Yelled at and Kicked out of the Guesthouse under Threat”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2008

A few days before Nadaam Festival , I arrived at train station.....tired and without hotel booking....Temuujin staff lured me to their guesthouse.... Location was okay.. The 1st night at the dormitory was okay.... not full..... clean enough....No kitchen. Breakfast was actually a small packet of biscuits put on your bed.. no tea or coffee....

On the next morning, when I clarified with the manager about the fees of the riding package he tried to hard sell..... he YELLED at me ( solo female traveler), and KICKED me out of guesthouse by threatening that he would call the police.... he openly said that he could easily earn XX amount of US$ in an hour and I wasted his time by asking so much... his ONLY interests were to fill up his family guesthouse and gers in Tereji as much as possible during Nadaam....I told him most tourists are looking for hospitality and good services NOT JUST cheap cheap packages.... His attitudes were obviously not suitable for tourism.... after leaving Temuujin, I contacted Stepperiders and got picked up and transferred quickly to their base camp for a week long riding trek..Though it's a little more expensive, the guests were impressed by the sincerity of the operator's family who made their efforts to care for us and demonstrate the mongolian traditions to us....

“I can't believe this hostel is still open. The owner is a psychopath.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2008

Just read the reviews of some other traveller websites and you will come across stories that are not normal.

I got beaten up badly by Temuujin and was a victim of psycho terrorism (e.g. "I've killed 3 persons before, I don't mind if it's another one"; "you will never see again" then he stabbed his index and ring finger into my two eye sockets; "you are not gonna leave this country, I've got your passports and I control everything in this area, police, lawyers, officials"). This was a proper nightmare. This is quite a long story but if you want to know:

How did it happen? My girlfriend and I were watching a DVD in the hostel one afternoon (one of the things you miss after 6 months on the road) as nobody else was there. The "manager" (one of Temuujin "slaves") asked us to pay the future night ($12; we had already paid the previous night). We explained that we needed to go to the bank but that we would like to finish watching the movie first. Then Temuujin called the manager and we explained it again to Temuujin but Temuujin cut off the phone line. We thought this wasn't a good sign and my girlfriend decided to go to the bank while I was staying at the hostel on my own. After a few minutes Temuujin came rushing through the doors and said "why are you refusing to pay" and I said "I don't refuse to pay" but that wasn't enough and the rest is history. The manager just watched Temuujin beating on me. The biggest terror wasn't the beating itself but being 1 against 2 (Temuujin pointed this out obviously, saying that he can do whatever he wants as there are no witnesses) and the psycho play (like I described above) when he wanted me to kiss his feet which I refused (well it goes against your instincts and I thought he's only gonna kick me in the face with his foot anyway) or when he asked me if I want to see his gun.

Luckily nothing more happened as my girlfriend came back at some point and the ringing of the door bell stopped Temuujin in his immediate actions. For obvious reasons we decided to leave the hostel and said we would still pay for that night but Temuujin didn't accept the money and wouldn't let us leave. He stood in front of the door and every time I tried to go passed he would hit me again (luckily he didn't touch my girlfriend, that would have made me mad too). He then suggested that he'd call the police (this goes with his idea that he controls everything and everybody) and when the police eventually came we were escorted out (the police did obviously not believe Temuujin whatever he told them in Mongolian) and we didn't pay for that night.

The police brought us to the British embassy. Unfortunately there is nothing they can do. Even if we had filed a complaint, the chances of a foreigner winning a case against a local are very slim. We complained at the Mongolian Ministry of Tourism but sadly enough it seems they didn't try or weren't able to close down this hostel.

I've seen some good reviews about this guest house. I guess it's ok if you don't see the dark side of Temuujin. But there is a serious risk that something terrible happens to one of the guests in this hostel. And I feel very sorry for Temuujin's wife by the way.

35 days fantastic in Mongolia and then this experience on the second last day in the country. It took me about two weeks to recover from it (I was kind of in a shock state for a couple of days and after that I got mentally very tired for a few days) but hiking in Tibet above 5000m sorted me out luckily.

Visit Mongolia but do yourself and me a favour and don’t stay at this guest house. Stay at UB Guesthouse with honest, straight people (Unfortunately, UB Guesthouse was full the third and last time we stayed in the capital).

“A Terrible Experience of Being Evicted from a Confirmed Room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2008
5
people found this review helpful

Despite traveling 100+ days a year, I very rarely write negative reviews. In most cases of a bad experience, I'm willing to consider that something just went wrong and would be fine for other travelers.

In this case, sadly, I am spending my time at the Ulaan Bataar airport (it's not bad, actually) letting fellow travelers know NOT to stay at this guesthouse or any of the related ones owned by this guy.

I had a confirmed reservation and an email saying that an airport pick-up would be waiting. There was no one with a sign, so after waiting 20 minutes, I arranged to take my own taxi. No big deal, at least at first.

At the guesthouse I was checked into a single room, which was your fairly typical guesthouse room - nothing to write home about, but nothing terrible.

I paid the bill and prepared to go to sleep, but then the staff knocked on the door and told me I had to leave because I did not have a reservation and someone else needed the room. It was after midnight by this point.

I showed them a printout of the email listing my confirmed reservation for the same night, but they refused to listen. After 20 minutes of arguing, I was put out on the street close to 1:00 a.m.

Seriously, I could not believe this. Everything worked out fine and I took care of myself, but I owe it to the rest of you coming to beautiful Mongolia to avoid this place. You will do better at any other number of guesthouses in the city.
