“Perfect if you love sleeping with bed bugs :-)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2010

Myself & my boyfriend stayed in Babylon for 3 nights in November. Upon arrival we were moved to the balcony room on the top floor as there were no double rooms available until the following day (although we had booked in advance) we ended up staying in the balcony room & paying an extra $16 for the 3 nights. Our room was large with 2 double beds, one was as hard as concrete but the other one was fine. However the sleeping arrangements caused the most problems. We noticed that the mattress was filthy & old & the pillows were stuffed with what felt like newspaper. Bed bugs were often to be found on the sheets and around the floor...I was bitten a number of times of my arms & legs before I realised. Also fleas were to be seen on the loungers in reception where most backpackers chill out. Dont sit on these! Would recommend a sleeping bag / sleeping on beach towels instead! Breakfast was cheap, had no problems there. Location was fine as vang vien is not a big place anyway. Didnt meet the owner who I had read bad things about, however the reception staff were most helpful when our transport to vientiane failed to show and helped us make alternative arrangements. Would recommend Babylon however I have heard that there are better, cleaner & cheaper places in Vang Vien to stay.

“Think Twice...”

Babylon appeared welcomign upon arrival but quickly became the worst experience of my two month of travels in Asia. We were watching TV one day when a couple came back to the guest house to ask if they'd left their camera in the room...of course it wasn't there anymore (though the owner refused to allow them into the room to check). Rather than handling the situation calmly the owner started ranting and abusing the previous guests. This went on for some time and eventually both owners ended up in a full on fist fight with the guests in the foyer of the guesthouse. One of the staff members pulled down the doors and locked us all inside the guesthouse with the crazed owner - who by this stage was on top of the guest, threatening to do some serious harm. Myself and many of the other guests were terrified, we were all by this stage hidden up the staircase and ready to run and lock ourselves in our rooms. I don't know who was in the right or who was in the wrong on the camera situation, however it was blatantly clear that owners dealt with the situation terribly...it left us all feeling extremely unsafe in this guesthouse.
Be sure you check out their terms and conditions of stay when you arrive...read the fine print. I wish I had and kept walking down the road.

“most excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2010

After reading some of the reviews i feel the urge to write??? The room we had was huge and great value for money. Nick and his mellow compadre Kam were a joy and very helpful. Nick is a loose cannon, and I'm sure he doesnt care if the reviews are good or bad, but both Nick and Kam are great fun a joy to chat to if you have a sense of humor and don't take yourself, life or Nick too seriously!!. We recommended this place to other travelers and hope that they stayed there as if they didn't they were missing out as will you if you don't give it a try! We were only staying for 2 nights but ended up hanging out for almost a week. Long live Babylon and its staff. X

“It was terrible, but hilarious”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2010

Seriously, Nic the guy who operates the place is a loose canon. You don't know who you'll see when you go and try to find him. There's the pleasent amiable Nick who will answer questions with charm and wit, or there's the bafflingly rude Nick, who will look down upon you like riverscum at even the most obscure question.

The rooms were nice! The free internet was a great touch - and the beers were cheap. I had some great nights partying on the rooftop and for most of those nights, Nick was in a good mood so instead of throwing us off the roof he politely reminded us that sound carried quite far in that part of the building. Nevertheless he did have some terrible moments - like when you wake him up. Or try to get back into the hostel after 9PM.

I thought it was terrible - but uniquely hilarious at the same time. I don't think I'd stay there again, but wouldn't mind popping in for a beer or three. Just to witness the walking conundrum that is nick.

“Worse hostel experience in 6 months of travelling - Do Not Stay Here!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2010

This place is absolutely shocking and shouldn't even be open for business. During our 6 months travelling this was by far the worse hostel I stayed in. It's filthy and the owner is abusive and rude. We had a brilliant time tubing but unforunately this ruined our stay in Vang Vieng. The owner sleeps in the recpetion area and spends all day coughing. He abuses his staff in front of guests and even shouted at the reception staff that there are rats crawling everywhere in the kitchen and that the rooms are filthy and unclean. He is a vile man. At one point we moved rooms and when I aksed for the keys to the new room he told me to [--] off and go and find somewhere else to stay because he couldn't be bothered to get off his lard [--] and get them. He's an abusive alcoholic, please do not support his business, stay somewhere else and have fun tubing!!
