“Don't stay there!”

My mother, sister and I travelled for a month around SE Asia in the fall of 2009, and loved everywhere we stayed (almost always hostels) except for Capitol Guesthouse. I really think this place used to be a prison. In fact, it still looks like one while walking through the dirty hallways, with bars everywhere. The room was large, but it was dark and the three beds were not very comfortable. Staff were nowhere to be found. The neighbourhood was extremely busy with tuk tuk drivers that wouldn't let us say no politely. We ate downstairs at the restaurant amongst cockroaches. Unfortunately, our stay at Capitol put quite the damper on our visit to Phnom Penh and none of us plan on returning to the city.

Nice rooms;very good mattresses and wel maintained guest house in the center of Pp.
Down there is restaurant with cheap food.
Definitely a good place for fellow-travellers.
I recommend this place and as I go quit often to Pp for business I definitely will stay over there.

“Get what you pay for - nothing wrong with that”

Capitol is a great place if you're doing a quick, self-directed tour of Phnom Penh. It's in a busy corner which is actually kind of exciting - plenty of late night foods, bicycle rentals, tuk tuks, and dangerous traffic - but it's also far from most bars and nightlife which can be annoying. For as low as $3 you have a decent place to sleep and the halls and shared bathrooms are kept in fairly good order. I stayed 3 nights and I think it was worth it vs. twice the price at hostels down the road (though I definitely preferred eating and hanging out at Dragon hostel vs. Capitol Restaurant where your meal comes with free bus exhaust (not on the side)). Then again twice the price means $5-6 for those other hostels and I've heard good things, so go check rooms before you choose.

Oh ya, there is wifi, but it's spotty and slow at best. Typical of Cambodia though.

“Rooms vary - but liked it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2011

We started with a roam around the area looking for good value rooms - there were 3 of us and a 4th on the way - we settled here for a number of reasons - the 3 bed room was HUGE and white and clean with it's own balcony (3 single/double beds each wioth access either side, as well as lots fo space on the floor for bags and a fridge). For this reason we stayed and had a great time with the AC. Compared to all the hostels around it was the best room by far (Nice GH had a smaller but more colourfully decorated room).

As our 4th friend arrived we moved around the beds and still paid for the 3 bed place with 4 of us. When they both left the two remaining moved to a double room (with AC) which seemed much smaller (double bed with access from one side) to mainly just be missing the new paint job - infact it seemed pretty dreary and miserable!

Our advice (with much of Asia) is to ask to see a few rooms, if not a few places!

We followed the advice of many before and on the second try had ice coffee - which was nice but nothing special? Maybe a little more condensed milk than normal? Not worth going for that - certainly not worth going for the food or service, with wrong orders, then double orders, lies about having no chips (then the double ordered chicken and chips came?) we quickly found the service and quality and quantity of food to be low!

We enjoyed eating at Narim 2 GH around the corner (next block) which seemed much friendlier service and gorgeous pancakes (if you like them thin)

* I should add this is in May - very hot - hence we were going for AC. Otherwise bargain rooms starting at $2 can help the budget traveller (rather than $8-10 for a double!) Also 2 people can sleep in the same bed (if they know each other well!)

Room Tip: Ask to see lots - they have many!

“OKrooms and staff but dreadful envirnoment”

I Had a Colleague book a night for a quick social visit to Phnom Penh. Id been here 6 years ago and wanted a cheap place for one night.
On arrival Í thought I'd made a big mistake 'the restaurant looked discussing, run down and I one of the most depressing looking eating places in the city. The entry to the rooms are up a narrow stairway tucked away round the corner with persistent tuk tuks, touts and guys offering sex and drugs to anyone who was walking in or out. Thats not unusual for Phnom Penh; but could be upsetting fro some tourists.

The room was actually OK, reasonably clean with a/c TV and basic shower room. For $8 I was happy with the room and the the reception girls were sweet with good English.
