“Rooms vary - but liked it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2011

We started with a roam around the area looking for good value rooms - there were 3 of us and a 4th on the way - we settled here for a number of reasons - the 3 bed room was HUGE and white and clean with it's own balcony (3 single/double beds each wioth access either side, as well as lots fo space on the floor for bags and a fridge). For this reason we stayed and had a great time with the AC. Compared to all the hostels around it was the best room by far (Nice GH had a smaller but more colourfully decorated room).

As our 4th friend arrived we moved around the beds and still paid for the 3 bed place with 4 of us. When they both left the two remaining moved to a double room (with AC) which seemed much smaller (double bed with access from one side) to mainly just be missing the new paint job - infact it seemed pretty dreary and miserable!

Our advice (with much of Asia) is to ask to see a few rooms, if not a few places!

We followed the advice of many before and on the second try had ice coffee - which was nice but nothing special? Maybe a little more condensed milk than normal? Not worth going for that - certainly not worth going for the food or service, with wrong orders, then double orders, lies about having no chips (then the double ordered chicken and chips came?) we quickly found the service and quality and quantity of food to be low!

We enjoyed eating at Narim 2 GH around the corner (next block) which seemed much friendlier service and gorgeous pancakes (if you like them thin)

* I should add this is in May - very hot - hence we were going for AC. Otherwise bargain rooms starting at $2 can help the budget traveller (rather than $8-10 for a double!) Also 2 people can sleep in the same bed (if they know each other well!)

Room Tip: Ask to see lots - they have many!

“OKrooms and staff but dreadful envirnoment”

I Had a Colleague book a night for a quick social visit to Phnom Penh. Id been here 6 years ago and wanted a cheap place for one night.
On arrival Í thought I'd made a big mistake 'the restaurant looked discussing, run down and I one of the most depressing looking eating places in the city. The entry to the rooms are up a narrow stairway tucked away round the corner with persistent tuk tuks, touts and guys offering sex and drugs to anyone who was walking in or out. Thats not unusual for Phnom Penh; but could be upsetting fro some tourists.

The room was actually OK, reasonably clean with a/c TV and basic shower room. For $8 I was happy with the room and the the reception girls were sweet with good English.

When we arrived PP,we were very shocked to hear about Capitol Guesthouse. We've been told by the tuk tuk drivers about this hotel that this hotel is very noisy, dirty & small.
But,once we reach Capitol Guesthouse,we're relieve, what the tuk tuk drivers told us is not true at all.
The room clean and spacious!
Cable TV,aircond, hot water and they provide tooth brush, soap & clean towel too.

Staff are friendly & helpful.

We also arrange our city tour and returm trip to airport with capitol tours-reasonable price!

P/s:I'm in love with Capitol ice coffee with milk & Heng fried rice(5pm-1am) at Orussey Market...yummy!

“not clean!”

we stayed there because we thought it'd be easy to get a bus. the room was dirty. first thing we saw was a cockroach (the corridors were filled with cockroaches). and the bed close to the light had lots of flying bugs and the long crawly types. in the end, we both squeezed into the twin bed for the night. won't ever stay there again. go across the road to dragon guesthouse. same price. same location. much cleaner and free wifi!

“Good, but not brilliant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

Capitol guesthouse is quite a popular guesthouse mainly because its so cheap. The rooms are clean, but the whole place could probably do with a makeover. The good things were that they have organised tours to the points of interest and can organise travel on to Vietnam. The restaurant was fine and there's even an ATM. A big con was the number of tuk-tuk drivers outside hassling each other for your business which got quite annoying. Its a good place to stop for a 1 or 2 nights to see the sights and then move on to vietnam.
