“Good location... not much else”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

We booked this place after being dumped in the centre of the city and making a dash for the river front area. It overlooks the National Museum which the sun sets behind beautifully which can be seen from the hotel. There is free internet, though the owners and their family members are usually using it. The cleaner tossed out my fiance's $300 teeth protector (which was perhaps stupidly soaking in a glass) and then denied it. The owner didn't seem to care about this and made no effort to rectify the cleaner's expensive mistake. The staff there seem inattentive most of the time, and unfriendly at others. Give this place a wide berth unless sunsets are your thing.

“Good value and well located”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

We stayed here twice during our travels, so the fact we went back shows how happy we were. This guest is right in the middle of the town, overlooking the national museum (which is a beautiful building that you will never tire of looking at). Being so central comes with the disadvantage of being noisy too, and the traffic on the road below can be heard all night. If you're a light sleeper, you might want to consider whether this is the right place for you (or at least bring ear plugs). Despite this, the rooms are very clean and security is excellent. We checked rooms in guest houses all round this area, and booked in here as they were the cleanest by far. The guesthouse offers good room rates which are clearly advertised on the main desk; if you are staying for more than one night then tr to negotiate a discount. Other reviewers have mentioned smelly towels... this is not the case, in fact we had brand new towels both times we stayed there so seems like they've resolved that problem.

“Noisy and grubby with bad plumbing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

I booked this hotel and had good correspendance with the owner via email - the pick up at the airport was good, The hotel is on a very noisy street. I booked a superior room and had a choice of one on the 1st or 3rd floor. Both rooms didnt have windows, the bedding appeared clean however there was an over riding smell of sewerage from each of the bathrooms which was evident as i walked into both ot the rooms without entering the bathroom. I move hotels straight away without staying the night - the owner didnt seem surprised at all. Excellent location however there are better hotels for the same price - i wouldnt recommend this hotel

“Met every requirement and a bit more”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

If you are looking for a good value, basic hotel with efficient staff in a great location, this is the place for you! We were were thoroughly impressed with the place. The rooms are fine – quite large with bathroom and air con for $18. There were immaculately clean and are cleaned every day with fresh towels. It is not the most modern of hotels but it suited us fine.

The location is brilliant. Right opposite the National Museum (amazing building!) and the Royal Palace, and about 1 min from the Riverfront and all the bars and restaurants there.

Contrary to some other reviews we found the staff very pleasant. The women who work at the hotel also work in the attached restaurant and they all work very hard and very long hours. It is worth bearing this in mind. Their gorgeous little children are often about the place. They were so helpful in assisting us sort out onward travel into Vietnam, our Vietnamese visa (the cheapest price we found by the way), our bus to Siem Reap and also a tour of the Killing Fields and S21.

Here are a few Phnom Penh recommendations. There is a great place called Daughters of Cambodia on the same road as National Museum. It is a charity that helps young girls who had been sex trafficked. There is a wonderful shop and a café upstairs with free-wifi and delicious food. We also ate at Friends, a fab tapas restaurant that serves as a training enterprise for former street children. By a happy coincidence we also did a Cambodian cooking course with Frizz restaurant (it was great and so is the food there!) and the chef who ran the course actually trained at Friends and is now a successful chef as well as studying business management at university.

We loved Phnom Penh. And we loved staying at Bright Lotus – in fact we came back on our second visit to the city.

“Superb location, reasonable price & facilities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2010

I had no problem reserving a room for 3 nights via email. I stayed in a 1st floor room, which was very clean, and the staff cleaned it daily. The room included TV, fan and air-con, hot-cold shower. The staff was not warm or friendly but certainly polite. The location -- directly opposite the National Museum -- is unbeatable. For $16/night, I was very satisfied!
