“Cannot disagree with the comments made here, with one big disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012 via mobile

The reviews here are spot on. Raffles is an extremely run hotel with excellent, attentive staff and detailed precision. The breakfasts are remarkable.
Unfortuntaely we've just had a bad experience at the hotel, and this comment is geared as much to the management as to you as potential customer.

On Tuesday afternoon we returned from a long day out to discover two repair men cleaning up standing water and repairing the air conditioning in the ceiling of our room (suite 261). Evidently it had sprung a leak, and the men needed several hours to rectify the situation. The manager of rooms apologised in person and the next night a bottle of wine arrived with some chocolates (thank you). Unfortunately that same night we returned to a partially collapsed ceiling and, yet again, more water. This was reported and cleaned up the following day but, disturbingly, no explanation or apology was proffered by management.

I'm not the kind of individual to write a vindictive review, but at these prices I think Raffles needs to treat it's customers a bit better. Good luck in your selection.

Thank you for your review on Trip Advisor and for staying with us. I was pleased to read your agreement on the positive reviews the hotel has recently received.

Kindly please accept my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience experienced due to the leaking air-condition in your suite. We are disappointed, since my team truly aimed to make your stay memorable in all aspects, including by extending you a complimentary upgrade from a Landmark Room to a Suite.

The two incidents were noted and reviewed on both days amongst the hotel's management team followed by actions taken by our Director of Rooms and Chief Engineer to rectify the matter. Once again, we are sorry about the disturbance the repair work has caused and appreciate that you kindly declined our offer to move to an alternative room.

I have also investigated in regards to the follow up from management after the second day. Feedback that outlines either positives or areas of opportunities is extremely instrumental for us since such represents a crucial lever to continuously improve our service- and product aspects.

With best wishes and kindest regards,

Richard Schestak

“Timeless classic”

This hotel is truly one of the last of its kind. The staff makes your every wish come true of it is within their power. When you step onto the grounds you know that you are in a one of a kind place. Everyone is friendly and they work hard to ensure that your stay with them is fabulous. The Elephant Bar is perfect for afternoon drinks. When you're at the Raffles you feel as if you are living in the movie Casablanca. This is a must stay place when you're in Phnom Penh.

Room Tip: All rooms are pretty great, but if you like quiet, you may want to avoid rooms near the pool.

Dear Valued Resident,

We are all delighted to know that you enjoyed with us a memorable and enchanting stay. I have noticed your remark about ‘’living in the movie Casablance”! In fact you may find it as a coincidence that we will show “Casablanca” in our ‘’Cinema under the Stars’’ on February 23rd, which will take place in our charming hotel gardens.

If not for the movie, we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back very soon to Raffles in Phnom Penh.

Best wishes,

“Lovely hotel - Old World appeal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I was quite excited when I was able to find a rate for this hotel which put it within my budget. I had been to PP before, but this seemed to me to be a guaranteed safe hotel, which is what I was seeking the most. This is a lovely property, to be sure - nice Old World décor. Before I arrive at any hotel, I always take out a copy of my confirmation, so I remember the room type and rate on my reservation. This is the one time I didn’t. As they welcomed me at check-in, they informed me I was being given an upgrade (“how nice – no need to check my confirmation now”, I thought). I was shown to my room, which was in an adjoining building (a short outside walk to get there), on the ground floor, looking out at the street (& the security fence around the property). The room had a glass door & window going out onto a small balcony. The room was very large, lovely & comfortable, with an entryway & a kitchen (w/ cupboards, tall fridge, sink, microwave). Nice high ceilings as well. However, as a single female, my concern was about being on the ground floor in a separate, unlocked building (you did not need a key to get it), just steps away from the fence & the street. (The fence close to my room had a gate in it, & there was a security guard standing there at the time I looked.) There was an unlocked door on each end of the hall leading outside, a few yards from building perimeter & the fence. In spite of the lovely surroundings, the location of my room initially made me quite uncomfortable. I checked with the desk to make sure other people were staying in nearby rooms. It was only as I was packing before my final day that I happened to check my confirmation & saw it was for: “State Room King Pool View”. I was a bit disappointed about that, as an interior-facing room located higher up would’ve felt more safe & secure for a female traveling alone. I did find out the hotel was fully booked, which is probably why they decided to move me to street view (maybe because I paid a lower rate?). But regardless, I still enjoyed the room & thankfully had no bad experiences. The only bothersome thing about the room (& it was minor) ended up to be the early morning noise from the street (dogs & such), which woke me up. Numerous street vendors were located there – round-the-clock, it seemed, & I think it was the entrance to a school. That’s also why the pool view I’d reserved would’ve been good. The bed linens were luxurious - I was hoping they sold the Raffles-embroidered pillowcases in the gift shop. (Nope.) The hotel staff members were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was delicious – a nice assortment of food - & the breakfast staff excellent. (I didn’t eat there any other meals.) The Elephant Bar oozes charm & Casablanca-type appeal – thanks in large part to the wonderful resident piano player, Rafael, I believe. Since I had a late night departing flight (midnight), I planned to spend the last evening eating there & enjoying the music. Unfortunately, upon walking by, my nose told me they allow smoking. Since I did not want to reek of cigarette smoke for my 35-hour trip home, I did not go in. I was sorry not to be able to enjoy Rafael’s marvelous music one last night (no nearby seats or benches out in the hall either.) But, overall, this is a lovely place - I would look forward to staying here again. I would rate this hotel between Very Good and Excellent.

Dear Valued Resident,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor. I was glad to hear that your impression about our Executive Suite was positive, but regretted to read your concerns about security. Please allow me to assure you that the entire hotel is very well secured on all ends and we take this subject as a company very serious.

As it relates to your room confirmation in regards to type and location, I emphasize with your preference and would like to apologize for any discomfort this may have caused. May I ask you to contact me at richard.schestak@raffles.com if I can be of further assistance since it is of greatest importance to me that all our guests feel one hundred percent comfortable in their respective rooms and suites.

“Extraordinary service at Raffles Phnom Penh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Staying at the Raffles Hotel Le Royal is an amazing experience, and should not be missed when visiting Cambodia. The word "unique" is often over used, but in this case sums up a stay at Le Royal .

The property itself simply oozes history, good taste, and yes, class. Added to that is a management and staff that are like a finely tuned instrument, whose sole purpose is to ensure your every need is met.The result is nothing less than astonishing.

As you walk the impeccable halls it is easy to imagine the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Charlie Chaplin, Charles de Gaulle and other luminaries taking the same stroll. After an exhausting few days in Siem Reap I was all templed out, and in need of the oasis that is Raffles. This gracious lady of a hotel did not disappoint. From the front desk staff, to the concierge, to the Butler who came with my Landmark room everybody made me feel welcome and at home.

I should also note, I had what was without doubt, the best breakfast buffet i experienced in Asia. (The home cured sea bass was a particular favourite!)

I also spent lots of time in temple recovery lazing around the wonderful pool.

As a retired Innkeeper myself (of a 5 star property in Canada), I applaud General Manager Richard Schestak and his staff for continuing to provide a unique experience to those fortunate enough to visit Le Royal. I hope to return.

Room Tip: The Landmark Rooms are particularly well appointed, and come complete with your own butler!

Many thanks for your illustrations on TripAdvisor and it was very nice meeting you! I appreciate your praises about our colleagues who are indeed an engaging group of people who take their profession to heart. Your report will be shared with everyone on my team.

Although most recently, the hotel has undergone extensive upgrades, modernizations and rejuvenations in both heart and front of the house, we keep our raison d’être of remaining one of Asia’s most historical landmark hotels with rich heritage.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Raffles Hotel Le Royal in the hopefully very near future.

Kindest Regards,

Richard Schestak

“Historical beauty, impeccable service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Upon arriving in Phnom Penh and finding out that our flight to Siem Reap had been missed, we were up a Cambodian creek without a place to stay. We hired a taxi to take us to the Le Royal, where we had a reservation for a week out. Upon entering, an immense sense of calm washed over both of us as we were ushered into the beautiful lobby and given a refreshing drink . The manager personally came over to speak to us as we explained that we needed to change our reservation due to our unexpected layover. He was immensely accommodating and had us check into a beautiful room, relaxing, and scheduling our dinner and spa arrangements within moments.
To know the background of the hotel is to step through time, feeling like Jackie Kennedy in the Elephant Bar or marveling at how beautifully the hotel has been restored since left in ruins by the K.R. No hotel has ever felt this serene, glamorous, and filled with history.
With our limited time in P.P., the hotel quickly arranged for a driver to take us to S12 and the Royal Palace. We felt very well taken care of and were quite impressed with the level of attention paid to us by the driver.
For dinner, we indulged in the Khmer degustation menu at the Restaurant Le Royal. The whole experience made for the best meal of my life, from the amazing dishes (try the amok!) to the white-gloved pristine service. Breakfast on the terrace the following morning was also amazing, with a noodle soup brunch that blows your mind with options. Spa treatments were also a hit.
The Le Royal is a place where you could be stuck inside 24 hours a day and find yourself perfectly content.
