“this hotel survives on the back of a good review in Lonely Planet”

The hotel has a very good website,we booked ahead of our trip and asked for a hotel transfer. We booked a double non A/C room at TK1000 per night and the transfer would cost TK1000.On arrival in Dhaka we were met by the hotel rep and and our room was reserved which is always a nice surprise! The hotel is located in the finance district of the city next to the National Stadium and is very handy for the old city quarters, but to travel within this city by whatever mode of transport takes a long time. The hotel provides free internet and newspapers in the lobby. All the staff are friendly and English is understood especially at the front desk. The front desk staff are helpful and cheerful but they are always on the make, especially when it comes to arranging a taxi. They will often book you a non hotel taxi and do the deal outside the hotel so you will be paying more, which is always the case as you pay extra for convenience, but what annoyed me on one occasion was that we agreed the price, and duration of the trip and paid it ,only for the hotel to demand extra on our return as we had taken longer, but we had paid for as long as it took. The rooms are small with low ceiling and low ceiling fan,the room was airless and grubby but we had western toilet with shower that was sometimes hot and sometimes not,but we do not mind the room condition when the rent is so low.The restaurant has a good extensive menu with lots of vegetarian options but when it came to ordering we only had a choice of one meal,so that was a disappointment. We went off for a week and then we came back to Hotel Pacific at an pre agreed room rate of TK1000 but on checking in the front desk wanted TK1100 and they pointed out that it is not a lot more, which it is not but we had agreed a price. We had an early morning flight so we arranged a non hotel taxi with the front desk the afternoon before,we were reassured that all would be ok and we did not need a receipt,in the morning was a different story a different guy on, who wouldn't let us take the taxi that was waiting, who wanted a receipt ,who wanted to check the taxi drivers credentials ,who wanted to know why we were not in the hotel taxi, very messy when you are in a hurry. We were due back to the hotel at the end of our trip and they wanted to double the room rate,my wife was ill so we did not travel and we phoned to cancel our reservation but they insisted we had to confirm by email. On reflection TK1000 per night was a fair price but for TK2000 per night I think you could get a lot more for your money than Pacific has to offer.Getting around the city is very time consuming unless you do it before 8am.

“Cheap and you get what you pay for”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2008

Stayed here a total of 8 nights in Dec. 07. I paid less than $10 per night. This place is a tweener. It costs a little more than a backpacker would want to pay but it would try the patience of anyone even thinking about wanting a nice place.

You can chose between AC or nonAC rooms to save money. In Dec. there was no need for the former. All of the rooms have cable TV. There is no topsheet on the beds. The windows open so the laundry dries but there are no screens so the mosquitos come in. The rooms have a desk. The toilets are "high commode" i.e. western style. There is hot water and the shower is over a tub rather than the floor. The place is fairly dirty and the walls need a paint job badly.

There is a restaurant on the second floor that is open generous hours. The food wasn't great but it was cheap. I always had a cup of coffee and a plain, two-egg omelet in the morning for 60 Taka - about 90 cents.

The hotel takes credit cards. It has a dial up internet computer in the lobby that costs too much for Dhaka - 50 Taka/hour but is convenient.

I thought the front desk and restaurant staff were extremely helpful and friendly. They were happy to store my bag when I went up country. They have a connection with Bangladesh Expeditions which can book trips for you. If you do connect with BE, the best thing you could arrange for would be to have Mamun take you to his home village 2 hours out of town. You stay at his parents' compound with the chickens and ducks. The walks to and around the neighboring villages were a high point of my Bangladesh trip.

The location was not far from Old Dhaka but you'd still want to take transport to get there. There is a great little alleyway for walking around a block to the west of the hotel and across the main drag. The hotel is also close to the steamship office and the post office.

  • Liked — Price, convenience of having a restaurant, cable TV, staff
  • Disliked — Dirty, no topsheet on bed, no screens on window.

“Remember this ia Bangladesh!”

just about anywhere else in the world this hotel would be rated terrible. The rooms are small and not completly clean, the staff are fawlty towersish and the food in the restaurant is average at best.
However it does have an electricity generator to cope with Bangladeshs' frequent power outages is in a relativly nice area and the staff at least try.
