“A great choice for anyone visiting Hue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

A wonderful welcome of fresh juice and cookies while being greeted by name and lots of sympathy as our train was over an hour late. The car sent by the hotel to meet us was waiting and no extra charge posted for this waiting time. We were given an upgrade as we were staying 3 nights and got a very large family room although the one we booked would certainly have been fine. Laptops in the rooms, DVD and 32" flat screen, full bath, robes, fresh fruit daily, fridge and a balcony ensure that this hotel is incredible value for money. The location is good about a 10 minute walk from the forbidden city and many other trips are offered by the hotel. The breakfast buffet offers a wide range of fruit, pastries and omelettes and other egg dishes and vietnamese specialities are available. One of our favourite hotels in Vietnam. While I would not describe this hotel as a backpackers there was a wide range of ages and types of traveller staying ( no big groups though.... bonus!). The immediate streets around have lots of restaurants so dining out within a 5 minute walk is easy.

Room Tip: We had room 301 which was a lovely and very large airy room on the front with a balcony. These are...

“Fine”

We chose this hotel on the basis of trip advisor and were a little underwhelmed. The staff were friendly and the breakfast reasonable for a 3 star hotel, but it was not anything lavish.

The highlight of this hotel has to be the towel art that arrives on your bed each day - we were first welcomed by a swan and the next night a dog when we returned to our rooms. Our room was spacious and the beds comfortable which is the most important thing.

The selection of breakfast food was quite large and the pasteries and fruit were good, but the hot food from the bain marie was uninspiring and the tea was very weak one morning.

Nevertheless we had some minor complaints:
We had a situation late on our final night that was incredibly annoying: one of our bedside lights refused to turn off and therefore, we slept without the air conditioner on as we had to take the key away from the power slot. Additionally, the hair dryer sounded incredibly sick and when I tried to use it, it emitted smoke and so I immediately decided that I would rather let it drip dry than put it anywhere near the hair dryer. We additionally hired bikes from the hotel and went for the slightly more expensive ones as they had gears - to my annoyance the gears were not set up properly and therefore on somewhat hilly terrain I was without gears. Although these are overall minor complaints, they did detract from the overall experience.

“It was ok”

Perhaps I was expecting more, our stay at the Orchid was ok. The family room was big, clean and comfortable however there was a musty smell to the room that we couldn't quite get rid of, they tell us we stayed at the end of a 3 month wet season and no matter where you stay it would be musty, perhaps they are right....... Breakfast was fine, the service very good and the location great. Lots of restraurants and shops close by. The hotel organised our bicycles and a private car to drive us to Hoi An. This all worked very smoothly and the driver was great - safe and informative, he spoke very good english and we enjoyed talking to him on our drive. So, would we stay there again - maybe, I would look at other possible options but perhaps we would return..........

“Nice room, we got an upgrade to the Honeymoon suite!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

The room had a jacuzzi which was also used as a shower. The bathroom had stone bench tops, walls and even a fish tank!! We had towel animals made for us each day as well as fresh fruit baskets. The honeymoon suite had a personal computer with internet access. The only downfall was the mouldy/musty smell in the room. I believe it is like this as it rains a lot in Hue and everything is wet and mouldy. If you go to the Citadel you will see this. The hotel is near the DMZ bar and plenty of restaurants. The Italian Restaurant around the corner wasn't too bad. The hotel's buffet breakfast was quite ordinary. You can book bus transfers to Hoi An from this hotel. It costs $9 US per person for a seat on a sleeper bus to Hoi An. Overall, not a bad hotel.

Room Tip: If it rains in Hue and you are bored, the hotel has plenty of DVD's which you can borrow to watc...
